Can anyone help me out and give me a run down on just how I would go about doing this? Would I have to go through A school or can I just work and get all their EPQ's signed off? And most importantly are you guys accepting laterals.

I do not know for sure if OS rating accepts laterals... but my senses strongly detect no. As for the process I would reccomend putting your name on the OS "A" school list, it shouldnt be too long of a wait plus you'll learn the info you need to know in a better concentrate.
Hope it works out for you, Our RFMC frequents this board, i'm sure he will have some insight.

Just curious, why would you want to make that change? BM is an awfully good rating. Tons of opportunity and variety.

yes very true..... i joined 4 years ago and what to BM A school because my recruiter said BM did the most LE. i ended up in a VBS team. no possibility for advancement as a BM. put in my lateral package for the ME rating but if i dont get picked up i would like to lateral to OS only because of advancement opportunities.

That is kind of a ridiculous reason to want to switch ratings... but I guess no one says you have to have a great reason. But I do suggest you look at some advancement statistics, OS is not far off of BM.

What experience do you have as a BM that has given you such exposure to the OS rating? I am not sure what a VBS team is. The typical experience of an OS coming out of A school would be a comms watchstander at a Sector, or a radio/CIC watchstander on a HEC/MEC...do VBS's have duties similar to those jobs?

i wouldn't say it was the norm at VBS teams but i some how got stuck with standing some of those related duties at a sector.

Good luck then, if you've already worked in a SCC then I can't imagine you will have too much difficulty crossing over to OS. But like its already been posted I wouldn't suggest doing it just for easier advancement, it may seem like a good idea now, but you may regret it in the future if your only doing it to meet a short term goal.

In either case you will need to submit your request to EPM and it will be decided at that level with input from both RFMC's. The procedure is outlined generally in the Personnel Manual, so my advice is to check the manual and find out what you will need to do, then talk with your command and let them know your intentions.

like he said, ditto. And yes, if it is approved, it would require A-School attendance.
