Hey folks, I thought I would start a string here about 'selling the rating' to our non-rates. Our A-School list for fleet non-rates is pretty low right now, which means I need to keep the recruiters on the look out for guaranteed A-Schoolers out of Cape May. This means YOU will keep getting SNOSs out of Petaluma who get to you as their very first unit in the CG. We all know the potential extra burdens that puts on your unit.
Please take the time to introduce any non-rates you bump in to out there to the rating. Let them know what you do and try to get them interested. Don't get caught up in the 'I'd tell you but then I'd have to kill you' loop about what happens behind those locked doors. |

Sorry M/C ... not many recruits biting off on the OS rate here @ TRACEN because I broadcast the OS rate as a bunch of bad-@sses and they think "Man ! I don't know if I could be that hard-core". Sorry ... I'll try to tone it down a bit ... . |

Chief - maybe if you tell them you are a different rating, they won't be scared away!
Actually, I would like to see you not being able to talk to them about it! I want the list big enough from the fleet so that we do not do guaranteed A-schools from CGRC or from CGRC-det Capy May! |

Hey MC...does it seem that the OS rating is losing its sex appeal?

I'm thinking that was in '03. |

I don't know what it means. I do believe that a lot of folks out there don't know much else besides 'they do something in that locked room.' They get to actually see what many other ratings do on a normal basis. If we want the best folks, we got to go after them. |

...
I have a lot of A-School literature that I use to "sell" the rating to the week 8 recruits. It's not uncommon for "us" to hunt down week 8 and offer our advice on rates. It's just that there are so many Combat-YEOMAN around here ... *sigh* . |

You know I have witnessed that several times on my trips up there. You all do a good job in that part. I like that a lot. Not sure how much sinks in at that stage on the game though! I just would prefer that you couldn't add "..and you don't have to wait 4 months to apply....."

Back when I joined, everyone wanted to be a BM because of the LE and small boats. After I got a dose of reality on a 378, I went TC...lol. |

Actually the OFFICIAL date the OS rating lost it's sex appeal was 01 JAN 08...That's the day I became an IS. My apologies to all. |

Matt, don't get me wrong, I am not asking you to stop that yet. I just wish I didn't need you to do that! I rather let the BMs on deck force help weed out any 'issues,' get them their basic CG fleet knowledge and then give them to us!

If you want to sell the rating to non-rates underway, catch one of the snipes or the BMOW on a hot day standing watch and ask them to come down to radio for something. Open the door with a coke in your hand, BOC playing on the stereo, and let the A/C cool them off for a few. That is how I became a TC, because this fat guy doesn't like to sweat!

How many OS's do you see in the Coast Guard magazine? Very few if any at all.
Any ways if people stop wanting to come into the rate maybe our SRB will come back. There is a good side to everything |

Also most of us OS's are stationed on shore, there are not that many non rates here at the sector that I have access to, in order to manipulate.
When it comes down to it, we are not the sexy part of the Coast Guard at all. We are the ugly red headed step child of the coast guard that does its work away from the publics eye. |

Bringing back the SRB would be a good thing.....especially for Zone B |

one and one does not equal two. We are getting our seats filled and we do not have a retention issue. I did not ask for an SRB for this next year, and probably would have been laughed out of the room. |
