Anybody guess the next type of job an OS is gonna do??

I donno. Perhaps once the People's Liberation Army (China) shoots down all the comms and GPS satellites, go back to standing CW watches and help the bridge BMs take celestial fixes?

I would think we have lost more 'types' of jobs than gained since JRR. I don't see anything in the near term for us gaining any 'types' of jobs. I see several things that might end up on the chopping block.

Admin Support Jobs at below Sector level units, such as Non-C-130 Airstas.

Message Systems support and maint jobs

If someone put something on my desk today to give those jobs away, I would have a hard time disagreeing with it. If the job is E-7 and below and does not involve an active C3 watch, I have a little issue with the bilet. Since A/S's as a unit have no C3 authority and no C3 watch (at least no more than a small boat station does) I don't feel they fit well into this 'tree' you mentioned. VTSs could go either way in my mind, but I am surely tilted more towards they should be us. The only reason we got the billets is becuase the people on the BM JRR subteam were bigger and meaner that those of us on the OS JRR subteam!

Before everyone exploads - this is no reflection on the people in those jobs who have performed well. This is a 'billet' issue, not a body issue.

As long as AIRSTA Borinquen and Barbers PT are safe. VTS, not for me even though I have never done it and give full respect to the job. Its just not for me. I agree with the C3 involvement "cuz thats what we do". A CASA job would be nice .......

BP would not work it's way to my choping block unless they stopped having the OSs fly. No flying, no OSs at BP. As for BQ - get there while you can, otherwise look towards the Sector.

A CASA job would be awesome. I would jump all over any of the flying jobs. Unless they fly on two engines, A C-130 can't even stay airborne for a 'long watch' from our perspective.

Hey, as a RM1 working IT out of CAMSPAC, I pulled some TAD trips on inconus and outconus 110 WPB boats, including a trip from Sand Island (Honolulu) to Guam.

Believe me, 110s are highly over rated, especially compared to buoy tenders. When one must dawn a life jacket just to go topside and get some air, that's too much work.

OS's at Lant are standing the Homeland Security Watch, to include LE. That's kinda different.

If a solicitation for the White House Communication Agency rears its ugly head in the message boards or other forms of announcements - run like hell! Run like it is the end of times!

15 years ago, such a solicitation came about for RM1 and RMC personnel. Sounded like a GREAT opportunity for some different experience at the time.

Oh yea, it was different all right.

A few years afterward, after I had retired, I talked with one of the Chiefs to landed a billet. Told me that there was a good reason that the imcumbant would be required to have a set of dinner dress uniforms in his or her seabag.

Seems that the First Lady wanted these personnel to show up in dinner dress and serve canapés and drinks at White House social functions and as such, these military personnel served more as domestic staffers and didn't have much in the way of opportunities to become technically involved with the W.H. Communication Agency itself.

I won't mention who that particular First Lady was except that there is a remote possibility (with emphasis on the word "remote") that she may become a Chief Executive/Commander in Chief herself.

Lesson learned by more than one person - not everything advertised is as it seems. Look at everything with scepticism and ask questions - ask a lot of questions.

Well, I have almost completed my punichment for my sins. Parole board hearings are late this summer with a potential release date mid summer next year!

As long as there is the potenial to catch halibut and salmon, I'll take Alaska over DC any day!
