I know I should probably have this but does anyone have the spill about the FCC fine of profane language on VHF radio's. I have been searching everywhere for it but have negative results. Thanks!
Unit on Ch 16, if you are found to be voilating the use of Ch 16, under Federal Law, you cuold spend the next 6 years imprisoned and pay up to 250 thousand dollars. Ch # 16 is for distress traffic and emergency hailing only. You are advised to stay off this channel. This is blah blah blah OUT.
Of course the verbiage can be changed from unit to unit and depending on what channel and such.
"Get off channel 16" always worked fine for me. Every second spent spewing the schpiel is a second you aren't listening. Besides, everybody knows that there isn't a single documented person out there who has gone to prison or paid $250K because they talked on channel 16 to their fishing buddy. It really sounds dumb when you blab that stuff on 16. Just tell them to move to another channel.
I have to agree with edgy, all the extra stuff really just ties up the channel. If you say something simple like, "Vessels conversing on 16, shift your idle traffic, CG out." in that tone that you use with your children when they've done something they know better than to do, it usually works. If not, all the extra's just make it worse anyway.
Case in point, we had the address of a kid that kept making false maday calls and the FCC was "too busy." We finally got CGIS to go down after a month or so of complaining one summer. They "talked to" (probably threatened) the parents, no conviction that I recall, the kid quit for that summer but we recieved a few more maday calls before I left NOLA the next. Same kid, can't be certain we wasn't getting DF bearings on him anymore. One of my favorite cases "Coast Guard mayday, RMS Mauretania going down in position..." We flew on and did a UMIB for 3 days if I recall correctly. Google the boat...
Here's a good one to read: "Vessels conversing on ch 16 ZAA, ZTJ ch 16. ZRV working freq. DE USCG K."

Had one like that at Group Hampton Roads, kid calling mayday, giggling in the background. We asked him where he was and he said he didn't know, so we asked him for his phone number, and he gave us a bunch of digits. We dialed the first seven and an elderly woman answered the phone. We asked her if she had a boat in her back yard, and she said she did. We asked if there was a radio on boat, and she said there was. We asked her if any kids happened to be in the back yard playing in the boat, and she said yes, her grandkids were back there.
