Except for CGC Northland all afloat OSC billets have been marked as Closed on the Shopping List, is it because the AO's are working on fills? Is that common, to mark as closed while working on fills?

I know some of the shore billets are also closed already. Because my number 1 and number 3 are both closed now.

Now that my fate rests completely in the hands of strangers I have to wonder. Do they send an email to all of the sea candidates that weren't slated? I know this may be a silly question but I have been short toured at every unit I've been to and this is my first real transfer season not coming off a boat with a nice priority.

I read the message my fine friends, I guess I worded my question wrong, basically I was looking to see if anyone who had been identified as a sea duty candidate had been notified they were going to such a billet. I see however there is a new post for such conversation.

I talked with Ms. Wlker a few weeks ago after receiving the email that stated that I am a sea duty canidate. I asked about going back to sea and she told me that she would rather put a canidate willing to go to sea over one that would just go through the motions. I understand that going to sea is not everyone's cup of tea. i could also sit here a make childish cracks at those who do not like going to sea. Putting the childish behind us, you will not learn the rate sitting on a 12 hour watch on shore. To get a true taste of the three sides of the rate (CIC/Comms/EW) you need to be underway. That is a fact that you can argue with but, however; it is a mute point, PERIOD. We all have to do what we all feel what we have to do. Also if the kicker is raised to a rumored $250...I'll take it. That would put my sea pay at $835 extra a month to train the next generation of OSs that will have the watch after all of us salty types retire.

OS's are now the Command Center rate, so you won't learn everything on a ship.

Actually, the OS rating is the COMMAND, CONTROL and COMMUNICATIONS rating. You need all of the aspects.

I stand corrected. Chalk it up as my 5 years as a non-rate.

To back MC on the 210's with the doorway being cut inbetween CIC and Radio also the C3 stuf we do on the ships as well as shore, sea time should be in your plan. My opinion (and the are like sphincters-we all have one and they stink), to have a good carrer/learning curve you need one sea tour. To be well rounded out you need atleast 2 at sea tours on two different platfroms. 5 to 6 years out of 20 is not that high of a ratio, but like I said before you have to do what you feel is right for you and yours.

To back MC on the 210's with the doorway being cut inbetween CIC and Radio is placing the 210's in a more C3 enviroment like the 378's and 270's. Our shore duty billets also have C3 involved. Even though shore has C3, sea time should be in your plan. My opinion (and it is like sphincter - we all have one and they stink), to have a good carrer/learning curve you need one sea tour. To be well rounded out you need atleast 2 at sea tours on two different platfroms. Think of this, 5 to 6 years of rated sea time out of 20 is not that high of a ratio. If you feel that you r non-rate time counts as sea time...it does for pay purposes but not learning the rate (unless you striked), but like I said before you have to do what you feel is right for you and yours.

I agree with you 100%. I think when sea duty candidates are picked, non-rate seatime shouldn't matter (all my seatime is rated, so I'm biased). I have no problem going back to a ship, as a young chief I'll be a sea duty candidate when I transfer from my current billet with 9 years in the CG, and half that time is rated seatime. I also was a huge supporter of cutting the hole between CIC and Radio when I was on a 210' as well.

Again..

On 270s put radio where it belongs. That is, right behind CSC and put the ETs in the bilges where radio currently resides. That way the OS watch can "do it all."

Well we kind of already did on some 270's. Over a year ago we shut radio down on my boat and all OS's stand watch in CIC only. We just made regular rounds of radio to do things of which we cannot speak and check message traffic. Where the ET's have their shop is pretty much irrelevant. Most stood watch in CIC anyway.

Once we get OS's out of the message traffic business and get the IT's down in radio then things will be more on course with where the OS rating is heading.

Why would IT's be required to do message traffic? CGMS is just a "tool" for you to get one of your C4's... right? Communications?

Yea but message traffic is simply data transfer and IT's are responsible for the computers. I can't believe MC hasn't spoke up with his opinion on this yet. He must be on leave. Whisper
