There are a couple billets open at Cams this year and I was thinking about going there. Isnt the rotation something crazy like 2 on 4 off?

The rotation is actually 3 on 3 off. As a 2nd you would start out in the booths doing GMDSS, air to ground, and broadcast. from the booths you would get qualified as tech, HFDX operator, then supervisor and if you make 1st you might do CWO.

Not a whole lot, to be honest. Air guards, a little bit of GMDSS (mainly commercial mariners), some wx broadcasts, lots and lots and lots and lots of message tfc. 90% of things pretty much run themselves, so a lot of it is just making sure that everything is running properly.

Hearts and spades. Smile

Honestly it doesn't matter what you are "required" to do there. It matters how much you apply yourself to doing what you need to do to get ahead in life. It was a great tour for completing education goals and other things that can benefit you for the rest of your career and life for that matter. It is all about how you use the time you're there. Do only what you have to do to get by and you'll be a master at the afore mentioned card games in no time. Best of luck with whatever choice you decide to make.

I just spent 4 years a camslant, being a watch stander can make going to school tough but you do get quit a bit of time off. 3 on 3 off equals 15 days a month. I have heard a lot of people complain about being at a cams or commsta but the truth is you can learn a lot. Yes you will start out as a booth rider, does it suck? YES!! And if you can tell me a job other then Willy Wonka's where its fun all the time sign me up. If you can get a billet there, take it, learn everything in the building and walk away with a ton of OS knowledge. Beer

I also just spent the last 4 years there. Like Tykon said if you can get a billet take it. You are only limited by how much you apply yourself there. People say it CAMS suck but those people don't take anything out of the experience. As a second class be ready to be in charge of a lot of the important systems that run east coast communications. It would be impossible for you to leave there and not at least double your knowledge.

and why would you not be able to double your OS knowledge? As far as being a TC, I was a TC before OS and the same knowlege applied.

There's something that goes by unnoticed at CAMSLANT as well. You can do a lot of in service schools as well as TAD trips to the Eagle or other boats without making anyone else really suffer. With 15 or so people on watch a night it's not such a pinch if you need time off like at a Sector that has to play rearrange the schedule every time someone takes leave. If you apply yourself and are good at your job, you also can get a chance at EKMS or other "special" jobs that get you dayworking. CAMSLANT, while I was there, had a kick *** chain of command that was second to none. Believe me, that makes a world of difference. It's a great tour.

I loved good ole CAMSLANT, I never saw the outside of a booth for a couple years.

Beware of the CAT Team billets, theyre almost impossible to get. You may be assigned to do that job, but it doesn't necessarily mean youre doing it.

Ask the OMFWAC (he is an OS2). He is there standing the watch since he could not hack it at sea. If you call there ask the OMFWAC how "BG" doing.
