Have fun being Lost in the Woods! You will end up in either the 35th EN BN or the 31st for OSUT. Red Phase is boring but can be a bit interesting and fun. White Phase is a lot of sitting around. Blue Phase is pretty fun with some high-speed training. Black Phase(AIT) can be very fun or very boring, just depending on the day. Enjoy your time there....it is great!
This should be fun, hard but fun. Life is what you make of it.
What do I need to do to be in the best position for Sapper School?
Was looking at ranger, but didn't want to go Infantry. I know CE is close, but what I gathered I would have a better chance of getting training in heavy equipment, Surveying and bridge building. Not to mention all the explosives, I like big booms....LOL.
I wanted to go Airborne but was unable to get it at MEPS. Hoping to get a slot if I work hard and get close to the top of class at OSUT. If not maybe later on in my career it will be available.
We had 6 or so pick up Airborne at OSUT...so be squarred away and you have a shot.
The Ranger Regiment does have 21B slots....just for your consideration.
According to many different cadre that we had....Sapper school is not impossible or even that hard to get. Then again....I have heard it can be challenging to get. Their advice: go to your unit...do well in PT....learn EVERYTHING you can....work hard....and be a sponge.
The best advice I received was "Basic is what you make of it." At the time that was the most vague non-helpful advice ever. Now that I am on the backend....it was so true. If you go with a great attitude, don't quit on yourself, maintain your integrity, and accept every day as a challenge that must be mastered....it will be a very rewarding experience. Don't get sucked into the "cool kids" and try to get away with stuff(see this thread: Don't Do It!) and have fun!
