One measurement for success is your ability to outlive your enemies. Another is that you live better. By both of these measures, Fidel Castro is a success. America did not defeat Castro. Like Stalin, Mao, and Kim Il Sung, Castro will die old and in bed and in charge.

John F. Kennedy's failure to act boldly in 1961, during the Bay of Pigs, was the key to Castro's longevity and his success. The U.S. had the forces available in Florida to have done the job. At the time, castro had not consolidated his control over the population yet. What's more, the world -including the Soviet Union- expected the United States to put this guy out.

A lifetime of economic sanctions by the United States against Cuba since then have done nothing, except add to the suffering of the Cuban people (most of whom now genuinely seem fond of their Great Leader).

I agree with AGBrina on the term of "Success", Castro did out last everybody...

But now onto the Future, theUntied States, if it really wanted to "Change" Cuba, would drop this rules against travel and trade with Cuba..and litterally Food the country with Millions of American Ambassodors (in the form of Fat Mad Money Spending Crazy American Touriest), That would have so much more of a impact on the Cuban people that any Embargo, Military show of strength or intemidation that US has shown in the past 50 years. The Governement of Raul would quickly subcome to the peoples will probably with one year. Cause, when you actually see people being served better, getting more and being treated better cause they got the cash to spend...You want to become that People, no matter who you are. Shove it in their faces and the Cuban people will want better lives for themselves and their future generations....
But, no, the US wont do that...so, hundreds of thousands of Americans travel to Canada and Mexico to get temprary visas as Mexicans and Canadians to travel to Cuba to enjoy all that Cuba has to offer to Tourest (restricted as it is)...but if that hundred of thousands was turned into Millions....Aaah Haaa...now we got Cuba where we want it...a Cheap Island Paradise 90 miles off the cost of Florida. Think about it.. Wink

This was where all the Col.North haters would weigh in. Ollie is so right here they do not dare tread! Evil will get it's own reward. Fidel made his choice for Satan a long time ago. I am sure he was a good Catholic boy once. We are the worst when falling astray.

Oh, Ollie, Ollie, Ollie. Now that the mouse that is Castro cannot roar, you're doing it for him. OK, he was a jerk. But the guy he replaced? Fulgencio Bastista? After you read about him it's easy to cheer for Castro. From the article in Wikipedia, "Batista was well liked by American interests, who had feared Grau's socialistic reforms and saw him as a stabilizing force with respect for American interests. It was in this time period that Batista formed a renowned friendship and business relationship with gangster Meyer Lansky that lasted over three decades." The stage was set for Castro and harsh anti-U.S. feelings. Of course, Batista was just one of a number of ruthless dictators or iron-fisted regimes our government supported in South America in its paranoid fear of anything sounding or appearing socialistic or communistic. Iran-Contra, anyone? Wink
