Anybody ever stationed in Yuma, AZ? I was and I miss that place. The freakin' food was awesome if you like Mexican food like I do. I use to go to Mexico for dinner a lot. Good food and cheap beer.

Not Yuma, but the food was a plus of growing up in Texas. The last time my Brother and I were there all we ate was Mexican food. I must have zhit fire for a week. Semper Fi John If you're gonna shoot, shoot! Don't Talk. |

I was stationed there, the food was OK. There was a Mexcian food place on 4th ave that everyone went to where the food was excellent. The big problems with Yuma is the HEAT, HEAT and lack of jobs. If you're not active duty or work on the base, the job situation is bleak to say the least. I don't remember the beer being cheaper than anywhere else. Don't believe with the present situation in Mexico that too any people are going to Mexico for dinner.

I read somewhere that to go to TJ you have to get a visa for each visit. |

I remember going there right after the Corps got it from the Air Force. That place really left a lot to be desired. The Corps used to send squadrons down there from El Toro for gunnery and ORI's. We would usually go there for two week deployments. Man it was hot, and Yuma was still a sleepy little desert town, where the greatest entertainment in town was wrestling matches. We took over the a/f barracks, and thought it was great, as they didn't have squad bays, but rooms. The biggest tourist attraction was the old Yuma jail. Going across the border in those days required walking is all. One of my buddies got arrested one night, and had to spend the night in the Mexican jail. He said never again would he cross the border. We collected money to 'bail' him out. Bail? ha! It was to pay off the local police. Some memories....but ones I wouldn't trade for anything today. I remember sweating at midnight on, just standing....Yuma in the summer is probably one of the hottest places in the US OF A outside of Death Valley.

I was an 0431 while in Yuma. I had lat moved from infantry to a crew chief on a 46. I failed the eye test and was made a embarkation/logistics Marine.

They have a hitching rail when You were there.
Think I was there in 77, spring. We did a 2 week OP with HMA-169. Had it Made was there as a driver . Picked up the Officers in the Morning. Played Spad's till Flight ops were over then drove them back to their Quarters. Only other thing I did was sweep the ready room. Unless We were winning at Spad's. My Partner for all games was a Lt. Kirk. To go on liberty and get to town you went to the Hitching rail to catch a ride. There was no Bus service. You Sobered up walking back to the Barracks. |

Gunny, I don't recall a hitching rail. By the time I got there in 2000, they had cabs.

That trip kind of sticks in my Mine. Know I could not take a Cab, was married and my spending money was short. So it was either I could drink or just walk around town. So why not drink and then walk home.
The the next weekend after this I go home to the wife and get handed Divorce papers. |
