5800,s MPs Recuriters and Embassy Duty are not jobs for real Marines, hire civilans to do those jobs. Marines are not rent a cops, Liars or diplomats. It is a waste of good Marines.
MPs hang around the base all day, while others are afield, Recuriting is a waste, hire a good PR firm. and young Marines have no business at embassys, this duty came around in the 1950,s after WWII when Marines were trying to justify their existance with no war to fight. Most become alcoholic while on this duty.

Bellator05 if you want an intelligent answer, maybe some good information about the MOS, maybe I can help. While he's entitled to his opinion, I disagree with that Devildog. My tour was not a waste of time, and we did more than just "hang around" the base all day. Recruiters work hard too. And I doubt outsourcing these jobs to civilians would be in the best interest of the Corps. I don't ever see civilians guarding our Embassies. Its an honor that the State Dept. posts Marines at our embassies, and not Airmen, Sailors, Soldiers or civvies in business suits. It's an acknowledgement of our professionalism and the image that we project, and not a "justification" of our existence. Apparently, the senior Leadership in the Marine Corps and The DOD shares my opinion, at least for the moment. Also, the plural form of Embassy is "Embassies" not "embassys". And "Recuriting" isn't a word. I believe the good Marine was attempting "Recruiting". Spelling must have been a waste of a "good" Marine's time as well. Also, my experience in that MOS helped me get into law enforcement when I got out.

+1. I was an embassy Marine and I don't feel like it was a waste of time, either. Moreover, ANY time can be a "waste" if not spent wisely: plenty of time "afield", sitting around doing nothing, was certainly not spent in the best way I would have imagined.

Any Recruiters out there take issue with being called "liars"? Maybe there's some Korean War era Marines here among us, who "didn't have a war to fight"?.

And it's spelled "existence". If you're going to bash fellow Marines, at least try to sound intelligent.

I think you would feel better about yourselves if you got away from those useless duties and got yourself back into the divison or wing were Marines belong. Of course you love embassy duty don,t wear a uniform, fancy house, plenty of booze, lots of women, little work. Real sweet while the rest of the Marine Corps is what Marines are supposed to do. Not your fault the Marine Corps need to get rid of these skate jobs.

Sounds like
(a) You wanted to get into an MSG billet and was turned down, (b) are still p'off that your recruiter didn't get you the job you weren't qualified for to begin with and (c)Had a run-in(s) with the base MP's. What a sad commentary when a retired SNCO show like you, shows his ignorance in public….not very becoming of the rank. Just as sad are your repeated accusations that all MSG Marines are alcoholics. Yet, in your prof., you claim to like chasing woman and drinking beer…..What Marine doesn’t? But hey man, don’t hurl insults at others if you do too. Next I’ll bet we’ll hear your rantings about being a RVN vet, 1st Anglico, being in Lebanon….blah, blah, blah. Yeah I said it, I went there. That’s if your claims are genuine. Because it’s hard to believe a Marine of your caliber, and one who's been where you've been, is this vile and offensive to your fellow Marines. But hey, anything’s possible here. You wouldn’t be the first SNCO we’ve seen promoted way beyond his intelligence level. Jealousy and envy at your age is truly a sad thing to see. It’s too bad too; I would have enjoyed talking to you about your experiences and what you’ve seen in your distinguished career. That’s what's great about this place. Marines like me can come here and meet the Corp’s finest and learn something. Unfortunately, we have to wade through the dusty, washed-up has-beens, whining and pining for the good ‘ol days back at Subic. There’s a big difference there, “MSgt”, between 30 years of experience, and 30 first years. Act your rank brother, our young Marines need you too.

Retiring out with 9 years on the streets as an 8412, I'll take this MSgt's comments as proof that not all who climb ranks have either a brain nor common sense.

Yeah, I felt a LOT better about myself when I checked into my first fleet unit: a Plt. commander on weight control, only a handful of people smart enough to tie their own shoes, and little or no training. If you wanted to sit around and do nothing, it was *the* place to be - far more of a "skate" job than barracks duty was. That's certainly not indicative of every fleet unit, but it doesn't quite jibe with your view of what constitutes "useless" duty and what does not.

Amen to that.
