I remember I was all juiced at the beginning, but after about fifteen feet, was nearly dead. Couldn't understand why, I just couldn't get up there. It was then that I looked back and saw some SOB with two hands clenching the straps on my ALICE pack (and a look of death on his face). I didn't even feel him! What a turd!

Very same one! I remember my SDI (SSgt Hall) saying, "Private's this is Mt. MFer, she used to be called Old Smokie!" Wink

We did that in the afternoon, then camped overnight at the base of it. Our whole series was there. All of the DIs were calling it Mount Mother F*cker. I've met people since then who say, nah, you weren't there, but it doesn't make any sense to me that they would lie to the whole series about that.

Wierd how your series did it differently than ours.

how did the week at ITR in boot camp work? Well all boot camp traing that week run by the DI's ot the staff at ITR, and would the staff at ITR run boot comapnies different each time? i would think the traing schedule would be the same from company to company with very little deviance.

Like I said we went up late at nigh, bivouacked and then came back down during the day the next morning.

Yeah, I don't know why it would have been different either but I can say I was in Company M, 3rd Btln. in boot camp.
I don't remember where the starting point was but we had a pretty long march during the first half of that day. Then the afternoon and evening went like I mentioned earlier.
I remember when we arrived there, they announced to us that this was Mt. Mother F*cker. I remember the whole series being there, and I remember the attitude among our DIs was different, as in them not being near as loud toward us in the evening as we got ready to sleep on the ground at the base of it. I don't remember for certain but we may have had our series commander with us, the lieutenant. Whatever the reason, our DIs weren't near as loud and nasty that evening as they usually were.

What the fuck? We never went that far in bootcamp. Seriously I didn't even know you could get recruits to go that far.
I did it a few times in SOI like all the other rabbits, but that's it.

Don't remember too much about MMF, we humped to it, up it and then down it. Don't remember camping near it. After we did it, it wasn't that bad. Of course at ITS, we were chased up a hill near Oceanside, the shore patrol cop was out of breath and could hardly hold up his pistol. We were breathing like the hill was not there.

We (3097 Series) did it in late November 1980.....of course, at the time our Senior said it was "Old Smokey" but later in third phase he called it "Mt. Mother*ucker"!

Mt MoFo was the equalizer between the Gods & the mere mortals. I personally think they (D.I.'s) low crawled us to catch a break.

Old Smokey is a 1,300 foot mountain on Camp Pendleton overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Once the Devil Pups reached the summit, each was given a “Challenge Coin” in recognition of conquering this culminating challenge.

1300 feet, that is all? What Elevation did we start at?
Mount Suribachi 546 feet/161m

The Marines that trained for Iwo Jima, they practiced on a mount at Pendelton( flags of our fathers), wonder if Smokey was it?

Mt. MF was not that bad in bootcamp ... humping Recon ( on the backside of Horno ! ) with all a grunts gear .. puts Mt. MF to shame .

Photo? I do not remember a road going up to the top.Smile Mnt MF was really not that big of a deal, besides it's name. To me, humping up the rain rutted hills was a trip.

Let's go back to 1968. Predeployment training at Camp Pendleton. All of our training was done in the vicinity of a similar mountain, however humping it was not part of the drill. If I recall correctly we marched to all of our training sites--not one cattle car ride the entire time while we were there. One afternoon we secured early and 2 or 3 guys from our group hiked to the top of the mountain. I doubt that they even thought about taking a canteen. While they succeeded in their quest I'm sure it was a far cry from a force march with rifles and packs. Shortly thereafter we boarded the busses to take us to the big birds headed west where many Marines were introduced to other hills not as friendly as the one we left behind in Oceanside.

I think the difference in our memories is due to the fact that back in 67 when I went to boot camp training was only for 8 weeks. Because of that there was time for Mt. Mother Farker. We did it in ITR (Infantry Training Regiment). Later when boot camp went back to 12 weeks there was time to incorporate this back in boot camp training. That is just my throght.

No matter, it wasn't really a hard hump, I did worse. It's all in the name of the damned thing. As for Boot length or doing it in ITR/ITS/SOI, it only takes a few minutes.

That's the back side.

The other side is where everyone "got aquainted" with MMF.

Susan Buxton, 66, heard over her granddaughter's 911 call. Arlington, TX 9 Nov. 2005. Aired 10 Nov. 2005, WBAP 820, Mark Davis show. She ended up shooting him in the leg when he tried to take her gun. Good shtuff!
