How's it goin Marines? I have a question that i haven't been able to find the answer for so I guess I will post a thread. Before anyone says "find" I just spent an hour using it and was for the most part unsuccessful at finding the answers I'm looking for.

Here's my situation. I'm a LCPL who just hit the fleet and I hate my MOS. It's got to be just about the most boring thing that has ever happened. ever. So I'm trying to find my way into something different. I scored a 99 on the ASVAB with a GT of 141. I run a 300 PFT and a 300 CFT. I'm also a very strong swimmer. I picked up lance meritoriously for graduating top of my class in my MOS school. I'm not saying this stuff to try to brag or whatever. I mention it because having these scores has resulted in nearly every enlisted person in my chain of command, SGT to SGTMAJ, and even several officers approaching me about going into programs like Recon, MARSOC, Scout Sniper, and MECEP. I have been very strongly considering MECEP especially since there is no longer a rank requirement so I am currently eligible and pretty competitive.

While randomly surfing the web I stumbled across ANGLICO. It was like love at first sight. I feel that this is what I want to do in the Corps. However how do I get there? I am currently one year into my four year enlistment and these are the questions I have:

  • Can I lat move into artillery after one more year(or would I have to wait until I re-enlist?) and then volunteer?
  • I've read that ANGLICO isn't a volunteer program. Does anyone know if thats true?
  • What if I go through the MECEP? Can I become an Artillery officer and join ANGLICO?
  • If I were to go the officer route would I be on the ground and in the fight or would I be in the rear planning things out?

I would greatly appreciate any answers that you can give me. Or even if you aren't able to answer maybe you can point me in the direction of someone who can. Thanks for any help

One of my buddy's was in ANGLICO. He went to arty school, trained as an 0861 and was sent to an ANGLICO unit. I think it's just something you get sent to, I don't think it's a volunteer thing.

MARSOC would probably be your best bet, they're looking for people.

If you decide to move into the Artillery side and become a 0861, you need to check into whether or not you will be going to ANGLICO school. Not every forward observer goes to that school. At least that is what the word was when I was at Fort Sill, OK a few months ago.

Yes, ANGLICO.... ( Air Naval Gunfire Liason Company ).... ANGLICO is a very unique unit within the Marine Corps!

I served with 3rd ANGLICO located in Long Beach, Ca and spent a stint with 2nd ANGLICO in French Creek at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. A little stay over in 1990~91.

The ANGLICO units have support personnel, although the primary MOS' you will find are 0861(Forward Observer) and the 2531(Field Radio Operator). These MOS' may have changed their respective nomenclature structure. If you read up on ANGLICO, you will find that there are many elements of ANGLICO. The Brigade, SALT and FCT teams.

ANGLICO will take you if your MOS suits the needs of the Unit. AND, if there is an open billet for your MOS. ANGLICO has no need for a Marine who's MOS is a cook. No offense to the cooks in the Marine Corps. Smile

There were only 4 ANGLICO units when I was in. There were 2 Active and 2 Reserve. I beleive there are 5 ANGLICO units at this time. I served with 3rd ANGLICO during the Persian Gulf War on a FCT. A Six Man team.

I am proud to have served with ANGLICO and have the distinction of being one of the Few who have!

Good Luck to you!

Yes. Our FCT consisted of a Warrant Officer, although other FCT did have Captains as thier Team Leader. MOS' vary. The Captains I had seen had previous Fixed Wing or Rotor Wing experience. I would say that thier MOS' (more than one) had the fundamental 0861 designation!

Naval Gunfire and Artillery MOS' and Communications are key attributes for this Unit!

We did have Riggers and Motor T in my ANGLICO unit as well! These MOS' are needed as well!

If you are that interested, walk over and talk to someone in your Chain of Command about your options. Remember, ANGLICO is a very active Unit!

There are great opportunities for specific schools to be sent to (ARMY & NAVY) besides a typical MOS field.

Adventure awaits!
