10 point Veteran Preference eligibles:

XP-derived 10 point (mother of vet who had 10 point vet prefe who is disabled and cannot use his own 10 points)

CP-disable less than 30%

CPS-disabled at 30% or more

I am a CPS eligible vet myself.

OPM doesn't say much...whats the difference?

anyone else here a 10 point vet pref?

Yes I have...tsk tsk....

I just wonder really is a CPS veteran is classified differently than an XP veteran with 10 points...since all points are the same.

is a CPS veteran "Higher" than a CP veteran?

If you take your life at once aside

Then remove yourself from the cast

Apparently the USCG Auxiliarist (whom never served AD in any branch) can get the 5pts.

Pre-9/11 I do not agree with, now with heightened security SF-86's I still would think t should be on something like a points system...for them.

I'm one of the CPS types as well, however, my 10 points were not used in my hiring. I've researched the issue of what these point preferences get you. I haven't found a whole lot concerning the hiring but a definate benefit of the over 30% vice under 30% disabled can be seen when you read about RIFs.

As a side bar to this topic.

When/if you get hired by a Federal Agency, if you are not receiving retirement from the military, tell Human Resources that you want to buy your Marine Corps time for retirement. It does not cost a lot to do it, but it adds a couple of percentage points come retirement time. Also, your time in immediately counts towards what leave category you fall into.

So make sure you have your DD-214 with you.

Too bad everyone doesn't take care of their employees! I had to ask a Marine I served with about the estimated earnings.

Rob,
I tried to send you a e-mail this morning, but it was a no-go. The link that Mel put up is correct though.

For a Military retiree, it may not be beneficial to buy your Military time. Like JD said, pay attention and read carefully.

I am a 10pt CPS Vet. Don't know much about all that. However, I used it to get into the Post Office. My first day is Mar. 17th. I know that the Post Office must hire eligible vets ahead of non-vets. And that the prior service years will count for VAc earnings, after the 90 day probation. I will be looking into buying back my years.

My father is a 24 year retired Disabled Vietnam vet, it would have cost him way too much$ to buy back his time. He did enjoy the advantage of his time for vacation, when he joined the Post Office.
