So my recruiter would stop calling my house. SUCCESS!!! But in all seriousness. To do something different, be a part of the World's Finest. Nothing could ever top this experience was my expectations and so far they have been met.

Funny thing is that my statement is half true, I did always want to be a Marine Astronaut.

I grew up an Army Brat. So, I knew what that was all about. Daddy was in 24 years, Grandpa, 20..... The A/F recruiter said they don't guarentee contracts. The local Navy guy was a Bubblehead, and that's all he pushed. So...I talked to the Marine recruiter...and now here I am.

I enlisted to serve my (our) country, and do my duty. It was my honor and privilige(sp?) to do so, in the greatest fighting force since the Roman Centurians, and the age of the Spartans.

I did a 6 year turn, right out of the box.

And yes, I would do it all over again, in a heart beat!

Oohrah and Semper Fi!!!

Hell, I knew from the time I was 5 years old that I would be a Marine! ONLY, it did not happen the way I thought it would.

Judge Dorr Davis, Broward Country Juvenile Authorities thought that it was better than sending me to jail! My parents signed papers when I was 16 years old!

A high school buddy of mine was a year older than me. He joined, went to boot camp, and when he was on leave after boot he stopped by the school wearing his sateen utility cover.

He had a huge unhealed 'wound' on his shoulder. He told us all he got it while being accidentally shot in boot camp. The girls went wild over that one.

Well, I wanted the girls to go wild over me (and the dress blues were cool). So I joined.

(Turns out his 'wound' was just an infected boil. Buddy Whitt - you're an azzhole.)

sorry joe, my attempt at humor..
money wasnt a factor in my joining at all. in fact, when my recruiter told me to line up those little cards, financial security and benefits was the last for me.
first ones were honor, leadership and stuff like that. someone said they signed up just to be a Marine. that in itself says enough.

You do know that I too was only joking! Hell! If I were a kid, and I thought I knew what the Marines were all about, they could not pay me enough! As it was, I would have paid them to get in!

They told me if I went Open Contract I would have a pick of deployments to Hawaii, Australia, and the Carribean...

Haiti, Guatamala, and Hondurus ARE NOT vacation destinations, especially after a hurricane or natural disaster!...Haiti is a a natural disaster 24/7

I joined for the huge salary they offered Big Grin lol. I guess I was bored in college was 260 lbs of fat, thought most of my friends joined the other services except the Marines why go to the branch where most people are too afraid to sign up for. I went to bootcamp came back 165 lbs and feeling I could kick everybody's a#%. I miss active duty and the UDPs.

Seriously this kid in bootcamp was asked by the Drill Instructor why he joined the Marines his answer was: In order to find inner peace sir!!! This recruit doesn't like fighting sir!!! Big Grin

Honestly, I was 20 years old and needed a change in lifestyle. I was going to talk to the AF or the Army. Being the huge procrastinator I am I never got around to it. I was walking down the street one day and a Marine recruiter asked me if I needed a ride. He dropped me off and gave me his card. Called him the next day. was standing on the yellow footprints a month later.

Definately got that drastic lifestyle change I wanted Big Grin

My best friends older brother was on Recruiter Duty so I was probably easy pickins. My old man was an FO in the U.S. Army attatched to the 7th Div. in Korea. He recommended the Airforce or some similar bunch of lightweights. I suggested maybe like the "Army"? He said I was too much of a p**sy to cut the Army. So naturally I signed right up for the Corps. His eyes bugged right out. Good thing since me and the old man had a falling out and I didn't have anything else on the radar that summer anyway. Best damned decision made for the wrong reason in my whole damned life. You know what? I finally got his respect.
