I just got out of bootcamp (charlie co. March 10) and all throughout bootcamp my j hat talked about how we are the downfall of the Marine corps and how the marine corps is destroying itself from the inside out.

Recently I read an article in scientific american mind that talked about how we perform in relation to what people around us expect of us. The study proved that people perform worse when people around them stereotype them as being unsatisfactory in whatever area they were being evaluated in. Asian Females for instance performed better in math when they thought of themselves as Asians (only because asians are stereotyped as being better at math) However when the same type of Asian females were evaluated as females instead of Asians they performed significantly worse.

Throughout bootcamp and still I wonder if the same thing is going on here in the marine corps. I'ts definatly possible that Marines are convinved that new marines are garbage and often times new marines act like garbage is because that is what is expected of them by their superiors.

I understand that the Marine Corps is in no way "soft" and sometimes the best way to get a marine to correct him or herself is to bring them aside and "motivate" them to do the right thing by means of a loud voice and a strong arm. but I dont think its nessacary to continuously stereotype new marines as garbage. The problem would be fixed if instead of expecting garbage from new marines we expected better than what was expected of us.

I was Charlie Company too. Plt. 1082 Aug. 31 2001. Well said brother. I consider myself new school even though I was pre-9/11. We are your brothers and don't consider you "garbage." We're a hell of alot brighter than Mike and his dumb brute cronies.

Old Corps (before my time) – rough out boots that your had to shave with a razor before you bottle polished them; herringbone utilities; chevrons that were embroidered onto the shirt; pith helmets for gate duty in tropical climates; Gen Victor “Brute” Krulak; China; Philippines; Caribbean floats.

Old Corps (me) – jungle boots; tropical uniforms; port and starboard liberty; liberty cards; M-14s and BARs (just phasing out); punishment formations where they would stand the offender in front of the company formation, read the charges, the findings and the punishment and then lead him away (stopped in 197-71); bars in the Staff NCO Club and Officers’ Closed Mess opened promptly at 1100 and stayed open all afternoon; Gen Charles Krulak; Vietnam; Philippines; Med floats.

New Corps – Still Marines, still getting it done.

Reminds me of me! I gave out a few pistol-grip-necks a time or two, back when. Once, the Major came around the corner while I was performing this paticular style of instruction, he did a quick about face and later that day he asked how the day was going? Just told him "No problems, the "Situation was well in hand". Now days, I hear they send ya to anger management classes. "Geeze"!

Alot of the younger generation of grunts that I include myself in feel the Marine Corps is getting weaker mentality-wise.

A Marine's mentality is what has made us a breed apart, it's what seperates us from the Army, it's what makes us attack or patrol those extra couple street blocks.
It's pathetic what I see. Everyone is scared of getting charged for hazing, everyone is watching their backs, can't do this, can't do that. Our leaders can't beat the **** out of anyone, and they'd rather not do paperwork to avoid skylining the plt or company.

It's ridiculous and I can go all day. I think the Marine Corps mentally is alot weaker today than my brothers were in the past.

On the flip side, from what I can tell...our training is lightyears ahead of pre-war training ops. I think nowadays were expected to know alot more, and perform more duties than our brothers in the past.

It's because of our past, that your training is light years ahead. Now its your turn to continue the fight.

Old School: Turkey peeking around corners on Friday (after the safety brief) at the barracks to make sure the OOD didn't catch you to be the Duty NCO... If he does, you shimmy down a drain pipe and run like hell to the tree line. If he doesn't, drive to the closest bar out of the gate and have a few drinks. Drive to the closest tattoo joint - get tattoo. Drive back to bar to get ****-faced. Get ****-faced and get in a fight at bar. Drink more beer with the guy (most likely another Marine) you just got in a fight with. Chase skirt until you get lucky. Arrive back at barracks sloppy drunk. DNCO carries you to your room.

New School:
Get drunk - get NJP'd
Get a tattoo - get NJP'd
Get in fight - get NJP'd
Get lucky - get NJP'd for sexual harassment
Get rowdy at barracks - get NJP'd

Yer welcome, Top.

Remember hand-starching our covers?
1" paint brush, 'pink' bottles of liquid starch, and the adjustable aluminum cover block, clothes pins...in the absence of the 'block', an empty 3# #10 can would suffice.
If done right...a nice, resounding 'thump'...
Only drawback...sweat or rain...hell...just getting wet... Razz
