I'm sure there are some things where you are "old school" vs "new school" and visa-versa.
Give some examples of each, for which you are one or the other.
I'm "old school" when it comes to women. I believe the "women on a pedestal" concept, barefoot and pregnant, etc. I'm of the "the guy works" and "the woman stays home and takes care of the home" view. I believe the guy should open doors for a woman. I think my wife is too. Whenever we come to a door, she will stop (if she's in front) and wait for me to open the door.
About 4 years ago as I was serving my third court ordered anger management class the instructor says steve your in a bar with your wife and friends and a guy comes up and calls your wife a who**e what do you do?
I looked right at him said knock that f**kers teeth right outta his mouth and stomp him when hes down.
Then he says well steve thats why you are here again you have not learned anything.
Thats when I asked what he would do and he rambled on about he would be the better man walk away etc etc etc.
Thats when I said thats the whole problem with you new school people and he asked why I said that.
I said well I can guarantee everytime that guy sees you hes gonna call you lunch money try to take ur wh**e to bed and pretty much spit in your face.
Where as my actions I will not tolerate that ignorance for one and after he loses his teeth he will think twice before doing that again!!
And the moral of the story sir is the reason you can go into a bar and not have it happen or walk around free is because of people like me that stand up to that ignorance and fight for what is right!!!
I did Have everyone in the rooms undivided attention and had him stuttering kinda by the time I was done.
I always remember as a young Lance Criminal(and I was) the old timers screaming bloody murder about the new fangled name tapes that we were going to have to start wearing on our cammies( oct 1992) and how it was the beginning of the end for the Marine Corps.
I always think of that whenever someone mentions old school.
That and Gunny Fink kicking the shiat out of us behind the building instead of givings us Pg11's and NJP's(it was a fair trade)
Old school? When they hung crossed rifles on our arms and took a stripe away. When I finally got ordered not to wear herringbone utilities to inspections (after the I.G. said "it's nice to see someone dressed in a real uniform") When they started issuing Army fatigues to replace Marine Utilities.
....I don't think it has much to do with time but who raised you....Peralta and Dunham are from this same "new school" you all are beyotching about.....
Old school : tradition and honor. Case in point, now that everybody's either retired or dead, our company Supply NCO. His name was Snow and we all called him "Hank" although never to his face, we called him "Sir" or Sgt. Snow. He was an E-5 Sgt, formerly old rate SSgt, his hair was dead white and he didn't hear very well. You'd never see him at formations or much of anywhere except the supply shed and the mess hall. We never lacked for equipment from supply, it seemed like no matter what it was it would be there when we put in the paper. When we came aboard he was an enigma until some of the old timers filled us in. He had been in Artillery in Korea, someplace vile and evil. He and his crew kept up fire support while defending their position from being overrun by Chicom troops. I forget the actual story of how long this went on but it was, like most of what went on there, mind boggling because of the sheer numbers of enemy involved. Afterward some would call him "shell shocked". In today's Corps, I fear that he would have been discharged to wander the streets. It was a point of honor and pride with us that he was there, a living artifact, if you will, of a Corps which was our legend. On occasion someone from Mainside would show up looking for him, usually on a mission to capture him for the hospital and discharge routine. For some odd reason he was never available, on "basket leave", TAD at El Toro, whatever. I transferred out after a few years and never heard what became of him. I'd like to think that "Hank" got his 30 and is sitting somewhere warm and quiet.
I believe in Chivalry Mike. And I believe that the woman is the primary caregiver. Alot of the girls I know are extemely talented and they need an outlet for it. But I think there's alot of things opening up out there that would allow the woman to work from home during the child-rearing years and then have a socially-connected job when the children are off at school. As far as the Marines go in boot, I don't think you have to strike a recruit to get your point across. Although I was grabbed by the throat and punched in the gut with a helmut which I am grateful for. My DI's made me earn it because I was the laughing "college boy" on constant firewatch.
