Iv'e noticed quite a few people who have both the expeditionary and service medal. Someone told me that they are getting both along with a campaign ribbon. It was explained while I was in that you rated one or the other not both, unless you had two different deployments, one in suport of (service medal) and one for "actual" combat (expeditionary). If there was a change what would the MCO be?

Thanks for the info. According to the dates I must have either misunderstood what we were told or was given bum scoop. Either way, thanks.

I got the GWOT Expeditionary for being on a MEU that never went to Iraq. And I just got back from Iraq and none of my Boots got the GWOT-E.

GWOTEM- No longer issued. It was issued from 2002 to 2005. You could not get both the the GWOTEM and a campaign medal for the same deployment.

GWOTSM- Issued for 30 days consecutive active duty, not including schooling. Since everything stateside counts as support for the WOT you rate the thing 30 days after completing schooling on active duty. Reservists rate it after being activated for purposes other than school for 30 days.

Iraq/Afghanistan Campaign medals- Rated for each deployment to either theater. Stars are now rated for multiple awards.

Update - Approved: The MarAdmin for the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM) has been released.

In summary, to qualify for the award a Marine must meet all of the following requirements:

* Marines must be attached to any Marine Corps unit (para 6 MarAdmin), either in CONUS or overseas.

* Must serve for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days of active duty since 11 Sep 2001
to a date TBD.

* Are not in a training status (e.g., recruits, officer candidates, follow-on MOS school, etc.); eligibility
begins upon assignment to their first permanent command subsequent to completing their initial
accession and MOS training.

* Cannot use the same qualifying time for the GWOTEM to qualify for the GWOTSM. For example;
upon completing recruit training a Marine goes to SOI and then directly to IRAQ as a combat
replacement without having spent 30 consecutive of 60 nonconsecutive days in an eligible unit.
In this particular case, the eligibility period will not begin until the Marine leaves the GWOTEM AOR.
Once the Marine leaves the GWOTEM AOR and has served on active for 30 days, the Marine will be
entitled to both awards and as long as the Marine meets the criteria for the GWOTEM.

STREAMER:

The NSN for the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM) streamer is 8345-01-525-6287

WTFO! I just checked to make sure and sure as hell. My Seperation date was 2002/01/31 on my DD-214, but I have no GWOTSM listed. Let's see 11 Sept 2001 to 31 Jan 2002 equals 142 days on active duty with a Marine Corps unit during that time.

Now my questions are "How do I correct this?" and "Should I correct this?"............. Confused

I leaning toward Fark it! Why should I care and why would I want the hassle? I think I'll just have another beer....... Beer

As far as fixing it when I got out we hadn't been issued the campaign medal, I went to the county VSO and they had me fill out a request form. I think it was an adendum to your DD 214. Don't know where it gets sent to. After about 6-9 months the VSO called saying he recieved a letter stateing that my awards would be updated. It's not much of a hassele if you want to have it.

Gunny, Seriously, you rate it....I help university vets and older veterans all the time about medals that they rate...I have helped veterans get the ICM/ACM, KDSM, ROKSM, and a GWOT-SM. I had to request a GWOT-EM myself...
Just fill out the form and along with the filled out form, a copy of you last DD214 and wait a few months...

...10 minutes and 45 or so cents....

worth your time...

Thanks Bro, but seriously. All it would do is take up my time and give me one more thing to worry about. What in the world would I gain?

I like my nine, it's even. Not only that the next time I'll wear my blues, I won't care. My Honey already has all my medals for that. I don't need to be looking for another one.

Nine is even, 3, 3, and 3. why in the hell would I want to go to 4, 4, and 2? Big Grin

Funny Story.

The first time I ever met.....

quote:
KELLOGG, ALLAN JAY, JR.

Rank and organization: Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps (then S/Sgt.), Company G, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. place and date: Quang Nam province, Republic of Vietnam, 11 March 1970. Entered service at: Bridgeport, Conn. Born: 1 October 1943, Bethel, Conn. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a platoon sergeant with Company G, in connection with combat operations against the enemy on the night of 11 March 1970. Under the leadership of G/Sgt. Kellogg, a small unit from Company G was evacuating a fallen comrade when the unit came under a heavy volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior enemy force occupying well-concealed emplacements in the surrounding jungle. During the ensuing fierce engagement, an enemy soldier managed to maneuver through the dense foliage to a position near the marines, and hurled a hand grenade into their midst which glanced off the chest of G/Sgt. Kellogg. Quick to act, he forced the grenade into the mud in which he was standing, threw himself over the lethal weapon and absorbed the full effects of its detonation with his body thereby preventing serious injury or possible death to several of his fellow marines. Although suffering multiple injuries to his chest and his right shoulder and arm, G/Sgt. Kellogg resolutely continued to direct the efforts of his men until all were able to maneuver to the relative safety of the company perimeter. By his heroic and decisive action in risking his life to save the lives of his comrades, G/Sgt. Kellogg reflected the highest credit upon himself and upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service.

Was on a flight line, for a Change of Command at KMCAS. He only wore one ribbon. I gave him my salute, and carried my azz on down the road.

The next time I met him was at NCO school at KBAY. When time came for questions I asked "SgtMaj, Why do you only wear the one ribbon?"

His reply was classic.

Who the hell is gonna say anything about it!

Big Grin Things I'll go to my grave with. Big Grin
