This morning started my first day (of 7) of RA. I showed up, was handed a stack of business cards, and was told my assignment: Go out and make one appointment per day.
I walked around the mall for an hour before I realized only old people are up and out this early. Then I realized no one of the age Im supposed to be looking out for is going to be awake for a few hours anyways.
Right now Im at home assembling a list of local colleges and when their classes start - mostly today and tomorrow. Thankfully Im home this week and not last week doing this, or I really dont know what Id do. It will still be tough talking to a kid on his first day of classes about joining the military, especially the branch that offers virtually no monetary incentives.
My day isnt done until I find a recruit, so its back on the road for me. I think Ill try some inner city blocks. Maybe I can persuade some of the local street toughs to put down their AK47 and pick up an M16A2.
All in all this reminds me of that scene in Spy Game where Robert Redford tells Brad Pitt to go into the apt building and meet someone. Minutes later Pitt appears in a top story window drinking coffee and carrying on a conversation.
For anyone who has done this "grunt" RA work, any tips or suggestions for me?
This time of the year the target group to concentrate on are this springs graduates who are not moving onto college. After that target, last years grads who may have put a year of college under the belt & have decided that they are done with education for now.
RA's should be gathering names of prospects for the Recruiter to call & set appointments, visiting their school with the Recruiter and out in the community where likely prospects will be.
A trick I use to do in HS's with literature was to visit every head (male) & stick lit into every stall. Gives the guys something to read when taking a dump.
