I received an invitation to join the American Legion and I was curious if any of you are members. I don't know too much about them, so I am doing a little research, but I wanted to see if any of you have any input, good or bad.
Used to be...in Pa at the time of Sunday blue laws, it was a good place to drink. But then I also was a member of the Hungarian Club for that purpose too...
American Legion is a good organization, but depending on the post, you may be able to continue going for the canteen (bar) without paying the dues while you're active duty. If you're not from a military family or area, I found it to be a huge stress relief when on leave to help release some of the culture shock from not being around the military mentality. Concerning American Legion vs. VFW, the key difference is that for VFW membership, you need to actually have boots on the ground for membership; American Legion you only need service during wartime. Also, most areas will lean towards having either a strong Legion or strong VFW.
Great outfit, I've been a member forever. However, like mentioned earlier it depend on what Post you join. Could be a lot of work & fun or a bunch of dead beats.
I'm a member of the American legions and a vice commander of our post. Besides cheap drinks its fun to hang with service members and share stories. It's a lot of work sometimes when dinners or other events are planned. it's all on a volunteer system, the only proplem is you only have the same few that want to do anything, while the rest of the members just want a place to hang out.
But we do a lot for vets as well as for the community we live in. I find its a way for me to give back a little and do some good for those who need help.
Not being an active service member, I feel i still serve my country with a purpose.
