Basic Training |
I had an odd experience last week.
Went to boot camp in 1977 at MCRD San Diego. While there, we spent time up at Camp Pendleton, and climbed some big SOB hill that we were told was Mount MF. At least it seemed big at the time! Fast forward 30 years -- 4 in the Corps and 16 in the Air Force. Also add about an 80-pound gut! Anyway, today I drive an 18-wheeler. Along about Wednesday night I found myself driving south on I5 from LA to San Diego, a route I've not done before. Along the way, I saw Camp Pendleton and as I looked to the east, it was pitch black, but I could imagine everyone up in the hills -- climbing, descending, standing guard, you name it. I saw an entrance gate, and I was deeply moved. And then about 10 miles down the road, I realized I was "driving at attention" and felt about 80 pounds lighter! Strange flashback! |
