I know a lot of you have great questions about becoming a 91W or 91WM6. A lot of us on here try to answer the questions to the best of our knowledge and are more than happy to do so. However, alas a lot of us are old geezers and have been in way too many years to know what is truly going on down at the school sorry to say. Also with it being a new MOS things literally change daily. You not only have the school's requirements to meet per se but the National EMT Boards requirements and if a 91WM6 then 50 state's State Board of LVN's to deal with as well. So to help you guys out please visit this site,
Meaning if they did not want you to call one would assume they wouldn't post the numbers. These folks run the very school and MOS many of you are trying for and as a result are the true subject matter experts. Before I or anyone else gives out the wrong information, unintentionally I am sure, please check here with these folks first.
I hope that somehow this link can be kept at the top of this forum as a reference don't know how to do that though. But it is a great starting point and a wealth of information for those who are thinking about this MOS. If knowledge is the key then these folks hold that key. Do not be "scared" to call them with questions it is why they are there and most will direct your call to the appropriate folks. Recently I needed information on recent medical advances made in the military and they were more than glad to help so here you go and hope it helps a lot and gives you guys a place to start.
I'm currently in the M6 program at WBAMC in El Paso...anyone who wants to know how it pans out, just hollar (I'll try to reply ASAP, but I'm in my clinical rotation, so I'm stressed!)
replaced the 91B which replaced the 91A and is now the what is refered to as combat or field medic (any medic can be a "field" medic however). But then if you would have checked the links posted above you would have known this
91 Delta's are also field medics....Operating Room Specialist...9 week training at Ft. Sam and 10 weeks ( hands on training ) close to your unit....If you prefer field medic....This is a good MOS.
I was hoping to see a little more action on this loop.
Ret/E6/SSG 91D Served with the 46th CSH during the first Gulf War.
Moved from the old MUST system into DEPMEDS while we were there. Seemed like we'd died and gone to heaven. What kind of systems do they use now (retired in 91)?
most field hospitals are still using the depmeds system with iso shelters. Some improvements in the technology of the medical equipment has been made though (field ventilators about the size of a briefcase, field cat scan, LSAT I believe they are called litters, etc).
I'm heading to MEPS in a week and need to know as much as I can before I sign anything. I'm looking at either 91W or going into operating room assistant. My questions are: Is airborne an option? How hard is it to get promoted? What kind of units or stations am I likely to be in?
I'm really looking forward to Being a Medic and just wanted to have more answers as my wife keeps coming up with more of these questions.
Airborne is an option for just about every MOS, you can put it for it and request it from your recruiter or you can join and try to go later. Remember though just cause you put in the paperwork for Airborne doesn't mean they have to give it to you.
Promotions in both MOS's are fairly quick up to the rank of Sergeant, after that they are slow as hell to make Staff and Sergeant First Class. If not looking to make the Army a career though shouldn't be an issue. If you are things are known to change.
Where you can be stationed 91W: combat arms or aviation platoon medic, combat support platoon medic, Battalion Aid station, Troop medical clinic, ambulance company, Fast team, Combat Support Hospital, Hospital.
91D operating room tech: TMC the larger ones, fast team, combat support hospital, hospital.
I'm going to try and get Airborne and Air Assault as well. As much training as I can get! Thank you very much for the info and links...and looking back at my questions...well, lets just say I'll try not to ask dumb ones anymore! Jeremy
Better yet for the best site EVER go to this link, you will find links to every medical MOS there is and their homepages, instructor and class information, qualifications etc. One of the best links out there and sponsored by AKO so you know it is legit.

What is m6? Is that practical nurse course? If so, I took the same school at El paso.
