So I have been reading all the "conversation" about the new Flight Medic paramedic program that the Army is doing. There has been some heated discussions. I do not want this to turn into another one but I thought I would instead offer some inside information about the program that is currently in session. The class as been asked to not divulge to much info out on social media so I will keep my info very vague and will not release any names or status on grades. Much of what I have read has been ether fails or "hear say". The program consist of a diverse group of AD NG and AR. There is also a wide range of rank in the class as well. We have a couple SFC, handful of SSG, handful of SGT, and even a few SPC. Everyone in the class has very levels of experience about 95% of the class has deployment experience and about 90% of them as flight medics. The class is set up much like a normal civilian class simply because it is a civilian class. Its run through University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The program was built for the Army but only in how long the course is. The Army had no say so in the curriculum. UTHSCSA is using the same program they use for SAFD for the flight medics. The class has been assigned to a AIT company out of FT Sam but that is mostly for administration and accountability. Everyone lives off post mostly close to the school. They all do PT as a class on there own and have very little to do with the AIT company.
As for all the talk about whether or not this program is needed or has any validation all you need to do is talk to the many Flight Medics in the class who have deployed as a flight medic and they will tell you this program is needed and will do nothing but help save lives during there next deployment. The research that was done by the Army show great numbers and really helps support the need for this program. The fact that the class has been visited by some very high ranking military members who all have stated how excited they are about this program should say that this program is well worth the time and money. The current class and the class starting in July will be used as the gauge whether or not the Army will proceed with this program.
There was a lot of talk that maybe these two classes would be use to build but a corp of instructors so that the Army could start teaching this from the inside. That rumor was squished pretty fast. It would cost the Army a whole lot of money in accreditation alone to be able to run this program. Not to mention Using brand new paramedics to teach a paramedic program seem very naive. This program will continue to be run this UTHSCSA.

I have had a great career opportunity recently presented to me but I have to be paramedic qualified. I am an instructor for the Department of Combat Medicine at Fort Sam Houston which means I'm a medic with my EMT-B. I have many questions about this program such as how to apply, etc. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm currently a NG flight medic, NREMT-P, and working civilian paramedic in a busy 911 system, and know two people that graduated the first round... Its a great step to get the flight medics to the paramedic cct level in certifications land, but the Army has no way to sustain there level by getting them out in the field treating patients to keep there skills up and build knowledge. The Army also has no way to recert the medics to the NREMT-Paramedic level, that is currently being discussed.
The major issue that is left to be seen and may be a reason for the Army to pull the plug is the fact that 1. the army doesn't have a good way to distinguish flight paramedics from 68W's in National Guard land i have to compete with all the other 68w's in the state. 2nd and bigger problem is the fact that they have nothing in place for retention, if you are going to send combat medics through paramedic school, cct school and pay for them to take the FP-C you have to have a way to get them to extended their enlistment, it would cost the Army way to much money to continue to loose these soldiers. They need a career incentive pay, or bonuses or to make the position a warrant officer just like pilots, especially sense after Basic, Ait, Paramedic School, CCT Course, Flight Medic Course and RL progression you are talking about having the training just as long as flight school. In California the whole process to be a CCT Paramedic is easily two years and most programs are Associates level (flight school is what two years?). The National Registry also requires a very extensive continuing education process in order to maintain current certs.
My guess would be that if the wars end and we stop all major operations in Afghanistan the program will disappear, since the Army won't want to budget for it unfortunetly. I would love to see them make flight paramedic to include (NREMT-P, CCT-P, ACLS,PALS,ITLS and RL 1 flight status) to be a warrant officer position. We shall see.
Not exactly true.
Depending on the CDR, I've heard of Units that are allowing their flight medics to work on the civilian side in their off time to retain certs. It is up to the individual to get the hours and training they need.
As far as competing with other 68W's, we agree wholeheartedly.
If flight medics are competing for promotion points with every other 68W, then they should allow them to use the Flight Medic and JECC course for points, which they currently are not.
As far as Warrant, it'll never happen. That's been tossed around for years.

As far as I know, you have to be in a hard flight medic slot, meaning you can't be excess. your training NCO can do some drug deals I'm sure but being an 18D unless your on the SOAR team your not going to be able to take this course. I'm headed off to this course in November of 2013, and am super excited for it. I've also heard about the warrant officer rumors but I agree it will never happen. As far as competing with other 68W's on the EPMS list, we are working that issue now. Mainly sitting people down and explaining the extensive amount of dedication and work that needs to be put in to not only become a flight medic but maintain your RL 1 status and all of your certifications. This process will eventually become a board which we can pick and choose our future flight medics based on experience, attitude and overall performance.
