Hey guys I will most likely be going to FSH for AiT next fall ( i swear in next week) and my questions are:
*is there a boxing gym on base?
* will I be allowed to train there during AIT?
* and could I bring my equipment with me?
I was just wondering, since I am hoping to try out for the WCAP for womens boxing, and I have qualified for it through us nationals and national golden gloves, and just want to be able to train.

I scanned the Internet for some information and I found that there is a Fort Sam Houston boxing team...I would guess that if they have a team they must have a boxing ring close by. So maybe you should make contact with them. They spoke of a PFC who did his AIT for Lab there (ts a one year AIT)who won for that team.

Now in terms if you will be allowed to do training, you are not allowed away from the barracks for a while so during that time I doubt they let you go boxing. However, if they still allow some freedom after a few weeks you should be able to do so on weekends. You would have to ask your Cadre about this subject. They might be of better help. The first four weeks I doubt it though.

In terms of equipment to bring along I doubt that will be possible. You only arrive with your clothes on your back when you go to Fort Sam and your military issued items.

Thankyou. I googled the story about the PFC and it seems to read he was boxing during AIT, so maybe there is hope. But either way I join the army to be a soldier first and a boxer second. I have heard of family being able to visit towards the end, is this true? and would it apply to friends?

I am not sure how they do that part now. When I was going through you could get visitors, because the weekends were free for us. So you could easily meet up with them. I would assume that when you get through the first four to six weeks that you too can meet with friends and family Its a long AIT so they realize that you likely want contact with family etc.

While there (about 7 months ago now), with B/264, I recall the cadre soliciting for a boxing team. Whether it is still active probably depends upon if the coach is still there or has PCS'd.

Check into it when you get there... thing about the military, information is subject to constant change.

I knew they didn't let you stay out all night or have weekend passes, but are you saying you can't even go into San Antonio at all any more? Even on a non-training Saturday?

I am not sure to be honest. I was there six years ago and we could do pretty much anything. Somewhere in these posts about Sam someone said they got real strict. Hopefully someone who just did AIT there can fill in here and give specifics.

I've been at FSH for about 6 weeks now. The first 3-4 weeks you'll be on lockdown, and pretty much won't be allowed to go anywhere except the classroom and company area's. After that if have good grades and PT scores you'll phase and will be able to leave base after training time and on weekends. It depends on which company you're in but our bed checks are at 11 on weekends, and 9 on weeknights. There's no overnight or weekend passes at all.
I'm sure you could have your boxing equipment shipped to you while you're here, but depending on how much stuff you have you might have a hard time fitting it in your locker.
If you have any specific questions about FSH or about the training feel free to ask!
