Hello:
I am new to the board. Currently I have a Bachelors of Science degree in another major and was hoping to pursue a Health Care Career in the Army. I have register at a local community college to complete some prerequisite courses for Nursing School for spring 2010 semester.

I’ve been laid off for a year now and really cannot afford to attend nursing school after the spring semester, so I was wandering about the options available in the Army. Can some one give advice about the quickest way to become an LPN in the Army or PA?
What advice would you give someone that already has a BS and wants to change to health care career in the Army?

Thank you,
Tee

PS I'm female and 31 years old.

Are You in the Army??
You would need a medical unit that has LPN slots. 68W (army medic) M6 (army LPN).
Medic school is 16 weeks, LPN is a year-ish. You would have to serve as a LPN for 2-4 years after graduating. Warning: Not all states give you the LPN from the army. Have to find out what testing in your state after the army gives it to you. Army should pay for it as well.
And 31...phhhhssss...Time is on your side...little slower in the PT test but hey...all good.

That being said for enlisted...you can go officer. Not sure about PA. Again have to have unit with slots. But other Medical Officer with BA available...Medical support slots..PADD..ect...have to check with unit.

You may want to look into the IPAP program. It is a physicans assistant program, and upon completion recieve a masters degree and a commission into the army as an O2. I know to be eligible for application you must already possess a bachelors degree but i am not sure if it has to be in a certain area of study. I do however remember from personal research, because i am thinking about doing it after my 4 years active, that they do prefer a bachelors in something like pre-med. (biology, chemisty, anatomy/physiology). Hope that helps you out. And like the previous reply stated there are M6 options for 68Ws. But i have been told and have read that the M6 slots are few and far between because so many people want it, that they are now only offering that as an insentive to people who are REenlisting into the army.

look man if you wanna be an LPN you are going to have to go in as enlisted. if you got some college under your belt you might be a able to come in as a PFC or specialist... when you go to medic school at fort sam guess what... LPN school is right up the hill ... its called the Mike 6 program or at least it was when i went to fort sam to get my medic MOS (91W back then)... you can try and volunteer.. as they ask when your in medic school for volunteers( your grades have to be good)... or I would try to get it in your contract that you want to go to Mike 6... thats the only sure bet... thirdly you can ask for the Mike 6 school after youve been in for awhile... Army has a PA program but for you to get in you have to have a lot of good references from medical professionals ie; DOCTORS... Also its best if you get in army and have either a medic or LPN job for awhile before looking at PA. the only other way for PA is to go to school for it before you get in the army..

No thats is crazy.... M6 has always been hard to get and yes it can be given as a reenlistment incentive but that is not the only way to get in the school... trust me if they made it only obtainable through reenlistment there would be no M 6... Look when you get in the ARMY you will see how it works... If you want to go to mike 6 school you fill out a 4187 (personel action request) once you get to your first assignment( after basic and AIT). It could take 6 weeks it could take a year of you filling out 4187s... it just takes persistance on your part. You might be one of the lucky ones and get in right away.. you never know
