Probably not, Those Marines were quick to tempt fate but not share it with me. A lot of skeptics in that group who soon learned otherwise.
I remember working at the ramp late one night. The Pearson guy was troubleshooting one of his systems with a hawaiian punch sitting on the front slope of the ABV. He got a little offended when I knocked it off sending it to the other side of the bay.
They don't sell HP in the vending machine down here anymore either.
Being a FNG (****ing new guy) to Vietnam in early 1968, I had not heard about the curse of apricots. Yes, as far as I am concirned saying the "forbidden" fruit's name had had little or no effect on my health or wellbeing for 61 years.
When my tank worked for the first time (for me) with 1/9 I was told that the C-Ration meal of Ham & Lima Beans (Ham & Mother****ers) was considered The Dead Man's Meal.
"Why" I asked.
Because the dessert of Ham & Mothers was a small can of apricots. If you happened to be unlucky enough to get Ham & Mothers as your choice of a meal, you almost always either threw the canned fruit away or saved it to give to the g o o k s when you may be passing through a ville.
I actually have eaten them (fresh) in the past few years. They are good!!!
I was reading in the Armor section here about the "A" and was wondering why it is the forbidden fruit.
Thanks
I heard the reason was due to a ship carrying both tanks and a******* to Marines in France in WWI which was sunk by a U-Boat. Ever since, the two combined forms disaster. However, we didn't even have tanks in WWI.
Maybe they meant WWII.
That was what I heard from someone. Probably insanely bogus, but that is the best (and only) explanation that I have to offer.
Why would a transport be carrying exclusvely tanks and A*******? If it were carrying the two as well as mortars, would tanks and mortars be considered the same?
You probably noticed I won't spell the A-word. I am not superstitious by nature, but I have seen my fair share of tanks F'd by the A-word. The amazing willingness tanks have to deadline themselves in relation to the spoken word or presecnce of a******* is spooky enough for me to care. Anyone else have an explanation?
Yeah, the vending machine guy was sitting there scratching his head that everything was sold out but the HP. The Tank Leader told him he'd be better off stocking that slot with mountain dew instead.
The " Curse " I have seen it in action. It is no joke. I do not touch them thing's. The story I heard was that an Armor unit in WWII was wiped out. When the unit was found they also found alot of can's of " A's " around the area.
