Vietnam Marine Tanker
Posted
I totally ignored a "standard" practice on many bulletin boards and discussion forums by not seeking approval "to come aboard."

I am a Vietnam Marine tanker. I was active duty 1966 - 1968. I was with 5th Tanks at Pendleton and then 3rd Tanks in Vietnam. I am a regular on the Sgt Grit Bulletin Board. I live in the Philadephia area but I am a "native" of Colorado. The spousal unit and I own a chunk of land in New Mexico and the plan is to move out there in around five years and join the ranks of the retired.

Out of courtesy to the forum, I am announcing my future attendance to the USMC Armour discussions. I am a proud M60A1 Rise Passive Marine and was on active duty from 1985 to 1992. First 5 years I was stationed out of Camp Lejeune and my other 2 years was stationed out of Camp Pendleton until they disbanded the battalion. I look forward to having plenty of future discussions on this forum along with several forums regarding the Marine Corps.

Semper Fidelis.

CORECTION: Active duty 1966 - 1969. I originally enlisted on a two year contract but when the Sr DI called all of the "two year pukes" on to the comapany street and announced that we were going to the grunts and to Vietnam because Uncle Sam wanted his money's worth for training us to be Marines.

After requesting premission to speak, I asked how this situation could be remedied. The Sr DI said, "Give me one more year and you can have any MOS that you want, as long as you aree qualified."

I "shipped over" for a year for tanks!!!

Hey TC92, good to know someone was around the same battalion I was while on active duty. Yeah, I have Dowdy on my friends list, but I have to admit I barely remember much about him. Actually, there are only a few Marines I have real strong memories of, probably because I am nutorious for not staying in contact with them.

Anyway, if you can refresh my memory, which barracks was A Co in. I know our barracks were on the main road side across the street from the church. Our parking lot was the one with the huge tree in the middle of it. I remember the tree because I use to park my Mercury Cougar as close as possible to it so I could do some work in the shade. Well, again it's good to hear from someone who was in during same time I was. Talk to you later I'm sure.

SSgt Shaw I have to say the picture on your profile displays the attention to detail when ensuring the cleanliness of our M60A1 Tanks. Wow, that flash was bright, but the whiteness of the interior of the TC's cupola is impeccable. I most definitely remember the days of PM'ing our hogs and man, that was crazy.

"Permission to come aboard"

Seems like the right thing to do.

I'm Don, I served six years in the Coast Guard, then ran patrol boats for US Customs for 17 yrs.

I come in here only to learn more about my son's job. He is currently a US Marine, Cpl, AAV Mech/crew out of Camp Lejeune.

Out of respect for you Marines, I try not to hang out here too much as it is not really my place. You'll see me more often in the Main Discussion Boards of Military.com.

Please stay safe and know that I have the utmost respect for you all.

Don

Welcome Don, good to hear you have a proud Marine Amtracker in your family. You should suggest to him to come aboard for some good old fashion Armor banter. I believe there are one or two AAV Marines floating around here. All the best to him during his tour.
