Vietnam Marine Tanker
Posted
I read in the last issue of the Marine Corps Times that the US military is working on developing a multi-purpose round for both arty and tanks. This beauty will have some sort of a selector that will allow the round to be:

1. Anti-armor like the old HEAT rounds.

2. Anti-personnel like the old canister or flachette rounds.

3. And HE.

I am mystified and curious if this is even feasable. What a cool thing to behold when it comes about!!!

Bump...does anyone care about this? I think it is too cool.

I mean, how many rounds does the M-1 carry now? 30? You have to rely on resupply for ammo and fuel on a daily (or maybe more often?) basis.

We'd bust caps and blow off 30+ rounds in a five - ten minute firefight!!!

johnwear, the below was posted as Holy God previously. I was doing some research on this armement and 'Holy God' is right. This could become a new firing system to the point where it would be fire and forget. Imagine that with a tank.

I want to be a tanker and hopefully I get combat support and that MOS, but anyway I was reading up on the Abrams and they're developing this new round called the XM1111:

In addition to this, the new XM1111 (Mid-Range-Munition Kinetic Energy) is also in development. Essentially a cannon-fired guided round, it has a range of roughly 12 km and uses a KE warhead which is rocket assisted in its final phase of flight. This is intended to be the best penetrator yet, an improvement over the US 3rd generation DU penetrator (estimated penetration 790 mm).

790mm is about 31 inches. And sin

I guess this pretty much means that once this is produced and we have it for all the tanks that every other piece of machinery on the battlefield is now obsolete? Except Challenger 2s cause they got Chobham armor?
