I'm current stationed at Knox so I can provide some insight. What kind of specifics are you looking for?

I spent my time there in Tank School. ABVGunns probably knows much more as he's been there for some time as opposed to my five months.

Personally, I think all the info you need is: Thoroughbreds + bag of nickels.

You'll find out what that means.

I just think it's the funniest thing ever! What a place. It's the epitome of the darkside of Kentucky.

I have heard WAY too many stories involving those places. Most of them end with "and that's the last time I got my bore punched".

Just bringing our Pigs out for a couple weeks of training...I'm not familiar with the area or what all there is to do training wise on the base itself.

I know we'll be on the range for some of the days...but what are some of the other training areas like, terrain, etc etc.

I'm pretty sure the ranges out here can handle your needs for gunnery. The MOUT facility at Zussman complex is outstanding.

Terrain: trees, hills, and the ever lovely red Kentucky clay.

Not alot to do on base apart from training. Radcliff is your typical military town, Wal-Mart being the big attraction. Louisvilles about 30 miles north. Plenty to do there. Stay away from Thoroughbreds, try PT's or Trixies instead Big Grin

You guys doing your AT out here?

Thanks for a little heads up on the SA on base...I'm sure we'll be prac'in some recovery ops....lol

So stay away from the Thoroughbreds eh? What about cougars? How's the cougar season out in those parts? lol

Don't do any Cougar Hunting Wink, Thoroughbreds is the first boobie bar on 31W heading to Louisville. I'm sure Voodoo can tell you if you round up all the girls in there, you'll get a full set of teeth Big Grin

You'll do plenty of recovery ops out here. Beware some of those mudholes are a lot deeper than they look.

I did my armor training, and much subsequent training at Ft. Knox, and loved it. I had kind of a weird experience in that I went to Ft. Knox directly from The Basic School and took Scout Platoon Leaders Course (SPLC) and THEN Armor Officer's Basic Course (AOB) so it was kind of backwards.

I don't remember the names of the ranges beyond St. Vith," or the training areas beyond "pinwheel" but basically I thought it was an awesome place to train. Every range or simulation facility you can imagine (SIMNET is just so awesome for large unit training), and I loved the rolling hills of the training areas. it forced you to think before you moved, because you needed to be aware of how you exposed yourself. Great training.

When I hear the name Ft Knox, I think about the surrounding country and the old movie "Deliverance" comes to mind. What a God-awful place to have to exist.
