Venezuela Tightens Grip on Oil Industry
Associated Press March 30, 2006 link CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuela had a blunt message this week for Exxon Mobil, one of the world's most powerful oil companies: Get off my crude-rich turf. Venezuela is tightening its squeeze on the oil industry, telling oil companies to give the state a greater share of profits — or get out. Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez on Wednesday said Exxon Mobil Corp. was one of the companies that would "prefer to leave ... rather than adjust" to recent policy changes. "We said we don't want them to be here then," Ramirez told the state TV broadcaster adding, if "we need them, we'll call them." Exxon Mobil indicated Thursday it had no plans to pull out. "ExxonMobil de Venezuela continues to have a long-term perspective of its activities in Venezuela," it said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. The flap helped push the price of oil above $67 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Thursday as the market reacted to the latest sign of tighter state-control of energy around the globe. Venezuela is taking on Big Oil at a time when rising oil prices, political instability in the Mideast and Nigeria and new buyers in Asia have put the world's fifth-largest oil exporter in a winning position. After snubbing Exxon Mobil, Ramirez said Venezuela has other eager partners, including state companies from Russia, Iran, China, India, as well as traditional oil companies. The government has increasingly sought projects with state-controlled oil companies in friendly countries. Last year, Venezuela granted exclusive licensing rights to certify and quantify reserves in blocks in the Orinoco tar belt to seven companies, including China's CNPC and Iran's Petropars. |

Well if that party ever won... that sure would bring them back to worse, and it would be the dumbest thing the mexicans as voters would have ever done, hopefully those poles are wrong, and just concentrated on a minority, otherwise we sure would have a heck of a situation having a commi next door, it's enough to have to deal with Castro in our back-pool and Chavez right behind.

Hugo Chavez Seeks Alliance With Iran
Monday, April 10, 2006 3:23 p.m. EDT link Officials at the Pentagon and State Department are increasingly concerned over Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s efforts to strengthen his nation’s ties with Iran. The two countries have even had discussions on holding joint military exercises, and Venezuela is seeking to buy uranium from Iran, according to Bush administration officials cited by The Washington Times. The Times reported in October that Venezuela had made overtures to Iran about obtaining nuclear technology. "Hugo Chavez has been clearly talking to Iran about uranium," said a senior administration official quoted by the Times. Chavez has made several trips to Iran and voiced solidarity with the country's hard-line mullahs. He has hosted Iranian officials in Caracas, endorsed Tehran's nuclear ambitions and expressed support for the insurgency in Iraq. Venezuela is also talking with Hamas about sending representatives to Venezuela to raise money for the militant group's newly elected Palestinian government as Chavez seeks to build an anti-U.S. axis that also includes Fidel Castro's Cuba, the Times reports. "I am on the offensive," Chavez said on the Al Jazeera television network, "because attack is the best form of defense. We are waging an offensive battle." |

Is this guy for real? What could he possibly have in common with islamic fundamentalists? Feeling threatened and bullied by the US and wanting some International attention? I can see his commie friendship with Castro. Question- will Cuba remain communist once Castro kicks the bucket? |

Yeah, he's for real...and he will need to be dealt with eventually. The oil is simply too important and we must ensure that it continues to flow without the threat of interruption. Regarding his association with Islamists...that could be the smoking gun we need to justify taking him out. Once Castro kicks the buckett, it will simply be a matter of days, if not hours, before sanctions are dropped and democracy is born. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Sgt_Schlappy, |

Venezuela Reaffirms Plane, Ship Purchase
(Source: Voice of America news; issued April 11, 2006) Venezuela says it will purchase 10 military transport planes and eight patrol boats from Spain despite U.S. attempts to block the deal. Venezuelan navy commander Angel Lopez says a team will head to Spain to supervise construction of the aircraft and vessels by the companies EADS-Casa and Navantia. He told the state-run news agency (ABN) that the firms have fulfilled all the requirements in order to start the work and that Venezuela expects to take delivery of the first vessel in 2008. Earlier this year, the United States denied Spain the licenses to sell Venezuela 12 transport and maritime surveillance planes which contained U.S. equipment or technology. Spain vowed to replace the U.S. technology and honor its contract with Venezuela. The U.S. says it blocked the planned sale because of concerns the move would destabilize Latin America. President Hugo Chavez condemned the move as an act of imperialism. -ends- |

Russia Denies US Claims on Venezuela Sale
(Source: Rosoboronexport State Corporation; issued April 15, 2006) On April 15, 2006 a briefing for Russian and foreign journalists with participation of the chief designer of Izhmach Concern JSC, Rosoboronexport State Corporation director general adviser, president of the Union of Russian gunmakers, Lieutenant-General Mikhail T. Kalashnikov was held in the Moscow office of Rosoboronexport. An occasion of the meeting was the article published in the American newspaper "The Washington Times", which referring to an anonymous source in the US Administration gave information that Russia had sold to Venezuela a batch of supposedly refurbished AK-47 assault rifles instead of the promised new ones. Speaking at the briefing the chief of administration staff of Rosoboronexport director general Dmitry Shugaev declared that in May 2005 on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation the Rosoboronexport State Corporation concluded a contract with Venezuela to deliver a batch of a new generation AK-103 Kalashnikov assault rifles. Izhmach Concern JSC is an executive of the contract. Dmitry Shugaev marked that Russia strictly observed her obligations in full compliance with specified terms of delivery. In the framework of the briefing questions concerning protection of Russian small arms designers' intellectual property were raised, public attention was drawn to the facts of unlicensed production and selling of Kalashnikov weapons. Every year illegal circulation of unlicensed light weapons reaches up to 2 bln US dollars. Infringing Kalashnikov assault rifles made in the worst traditions of unlicensed manufacturing constitute up to 80-90 %. Thus, an unjustified damage is caused to the image of Russia as a leading exporter of up-to-date armament and military equipment, the world-famous Russian brand of Kalashnikov assault rifles is discredited. Dmitry Shugaev underlined, that when small arms were delivered with overdue licences or without such at all, intergovernmental agreements and norms of international law were roughly broken. Russia does her best to provide protection of intellectual activity results in the sphere of high defence technologies. This is a matter of special importance on the eve of Russia's joining World Trade Organisation. |
