I think a more appropriate place to post this question is over in the USASOC forum.

Good luck!

Gone.

No it cannot replace the newer model M-4. The SOCOM is too heavey. And it would also cause a hugh and expensive ammo change out from .223 to .308 cal.

SOCOM has already chosen a replacement weapon:
The FN SCAR. The weapon can be rechamber between 5.56 and 7.62 in about 20 minutes, and is compatible with all existing ammunition, rail accessories, and magazine types.
How it works, don't ask because I don't know.

If they could reduce the weight of that rifle, it may be a weapon of choice for some missions. a folding stock? semi, burst, full auto? they need to keep re-working it. m-14 socomII, still my choice for DMR.

the Ak first and best OMG it should not be on the list in teh first place. It is big, heavy, lots of recoil, and to take the safty off you must take your finger off the trigger wasting the seconds were it matters. I see the M4 as far better to the peice of crap known as the Ak47. It is tough and it can go though hell and still fire, but there are more things than just that to consider in a military rifle.

i saw that show and according to thier "formula", the AK came out #1. i really don't agree either, but i think the AK'S reliability to fire after abusing it put it over the top. maybe that should be a new topic "TOP 10 RIFLES". I think the M-16 is a soldiers rifle. accurate, lite, with pic rails you can swap out things to fit the mission. the AK? its for a conscript army and terrorists that don't know jack about weapons. its just very reliable. it was a collaboration between the russian and a german named Schmiesser. if you look at the MP-44 Sturmgewer and the AK, they look very similar. i really wish we had a top 10 rifle topic. Smile

My thing is I hear so much about the US should just buy AK-47s and end the trouble with the M-16s. fact is the m-16 is a far better weapon for combat. Also something I forgot to mention, there is a reason why there are no AK-47 combat sniper rifles out there, and for the same reason why the M-16/ar-15 is on of the most used of all semi Auto rifles in the Combat sniper role (the M1 is the only real competition, at least on todays battlefield).

besides the M-16 being used as a DMR, the M-14 has made a comeback. the M-14 is perfect for this role. some Army units use the SR-25, but i think the Marines are using the M-14 more. i think every sqaud should have 1 or 2. i bet some of those WW2 weapons would come in handy today. i bet a Thompson would come in real handy when clearing rooms.
