Look at that list of yours. Look a bit strange if you put it in historical context.

How much aid did we promise these countries?

Give me a couple Billion and a squadron of f16s and I'll watch your back all day long.

I would rank them in this order of "helpfulness"...

Sweden: 30%...(which is about the same as France & Germany)
Finland: 20%
Switzerland & Eire: 10%

Notice how we don't return the favor. Wink

Besides, the list is based on those who stand beside the US and can be trusted to lend support with military assistance when needed. Either Sweden doesn't support US values...or they do not have "las pelotas" to lend the assistance...which is it?

Nothing wrong with the Cojones of our troops in Congo, Bosnia or Afghanistan...so I guess it has to be that pesky neutrality-don't support things we don't believe in without proper evidence and motives-thing... however, with our massive standing army of 18 000 men we tend to stretch our resources thin a little sooner than you guys Razz And most of those are doing their service...and you know what the public thinks about sending conscripts to fight in faraway places..

As an example...the navy is just having the big manuever of the year in the archipelago here in Gothenburg...the whole graduation class of 2000 sailors, 70 vessels and 5 helicopters... our entire navy couldn't man one of your carriers even.Wink

I know the list was about who'd follow you... just wanted to point out that Sweden's considered a country you can trust..according to the US congress.

For the record, could you give us a breakdown of the number/unit type of Swedish troops in each of those countries?

Sure...can't find a summary of all the contingents and the unit types, but right now there's only about 800 people out in various locations. This map shows what's currently on.

you can read about the different missions here.
http://www.swedint.mil.se/article.php?id=8512

Here's by the way a pic from Pristina where a Swedish-US unit patrols together (yanks to the right and Swedes to the left if you can't tell the uniforms apartWink)

I've applied for the mission in Congo btw, that's primarly an airport security and control mission with about 100 people. So with any luck I'll take my pelotas with me and do my part starting in December/january...

800?

Are you aware that there are more US troops than that currently tasked with washing other GI's skivees in Iraq?!!

Sorry Forbo, but until Sweden steps up to the plate...and I mean with at least a brigade...to lend credible military assistance to the US in either Afghanistan or Iraq, the I will not place them very high on my list.

Are you aware that there's more people living in NY than in the whole of Sweden?

There's been 9000 Swedes in Bosnia, and the international brigade is being set up right, that in itself will be about 1200.

Anyway...no, you can't expect assistance militarily from us...we don't support your actions. We fulfill our trade deals with you no matter that we don't condone your actions..and that's what thrustworthyness is about, in my book. So..to answer your original question again...it's not about lacking cojones...we do our part with what we've got. So I guess it's all about not supporting your actions.... your "values" are the same as ours if you're thinking about freedom, democracy and individuality..as in the rest of the western world including France, Germany and many others that don't support your interpretation of how to impose freedom on other people...

Your opinion on "100% got your back" is like the murderer who says to his friend "Either you're with me or you're against me...you gonna be loyal or not?" Roll Eyes

No...its more like...help us to defeat our mutual enemy...ISLAMISTS!

Apparently, you will only do so once you've been directly attacked...which will happen eventually, whether you want to believe it or not.

This is QUITE the topic to say the least! I had to do a double-take when I saw that this topic started over a year ago! Impressive staying power!

Anyway, without going into %'s, here's my own personal take on Friends and Enemies:

OLD FRIENDS:

UK - Thank God for Tony Blair!

Austrailia - Staunch ally during Gulf War II, though I think all it took to convince them was promoting it as a "free vacation," and a case of beer.

Spain - Stuck to their guns in spite of sharing a border with France.

Israel - Whatever their motives, they have been quite useful in the War on Terror.

South Korea - DEFINETLY a nation that knows how to fight! My Dad fought alongside some of them during Vietnam, and he left with the highest respect for them.

NEW FRIENDS:
Czech Republic
Romania
Poland
Slovakia
Slovinia
. . .basically the entire old Eastern Bloc! All I can say is "Welcome aboard! Glad to have ya!"

DISAPPOINTMENTS:
Canada - My armor unit trains with the Candian 1st Armoured Cav all the time, and our units have become old friends. Whatever has caused the apparant liberalism and animosity towards us has really let me down!

Germany - I don't QUITE classify them as an enemy, though I do feel that we need to pull all our forces out of Germany (Czech Republic is looking quite good!). Schroeder is a jackass, but I can't condemn the entire country for his idiocy.

NEUTRAL:
Iraq - I agree that we need to come up with a game plan to finish the job and come home. For the most part, your average Iraqi is harmless enough. Who knows, they might make the FRIENDS list some day!

Turkey - Full of islamics that hate us, but their government seems to be keeping a tight reign on them.

ENEMIES:
France - I think the majority of Americans agree that France is NOT an ally of the U.S. When their foriegn minister (I forget his name) can't even say who they would rather win the war, Iraq or the U.S., something is wrong! Anyway, I won't dwell on this, we all know what France's true colors are!

Belgium - They get listed on the ENEMIES list just for their stupidity in allying themselves with France!

Russia - About as trustworthy as the French. They're still angry about their impotence on the world stage being exposed!

North Korea - Somebody needs to give these guys a good dose of "Shut the F@#$k Up!" They enslave their people, brain-wash them to think it is great, and then decide to start stuff with the rest of the world. Thankfully South Korea knows how to fight!

China - Not a big-mouthed as North Korea, but it would seem that sometimes they just don't know their role in the world. They may be obsessed with Taiwan, but if we stick to our guns, I don't think they'd be stupid enough to come to blows with us. Not just because of the crippling effects it would have on their military, but because they rely on us too much for trade.

Iran - Still an enemy, albiet a pascified one. With the American/British juggernaught still in place in Iraq, most of our middle-easter enemies have been pretty quiet. We just need to squash all the damn insurgents they keep sending across the border!

Anyway, I'm sure I left a bunch of people off, but this was a synopsis of what I could come up with. I think a lot of us are in agreement on most of these.

"Cobra Red-3 Out!"

You forgot Mexico. You'd think with all the employment we provide that country, President Fox would be little more gracious. Maybe we need to tighten the border.
