I'm asking this on behalf of a friend of mine. He's 20 in good shape, high school diploma, clean background, no problems w/ his credit, no college units and he's a smart guy.

He hasn't gone into the recruiters or anything yet but I was talking to him a few hours ago about how I was joining and he seemed interested. He asked me what rating would I suggest for him (obviously it's not like I'm going to be picking it for him, I'm just gonna try to help him out).

He said if he joins he'd probably be a 'lifer' (liked the idea of a pension when he's 40).
He does want to get a bachelor's while he's in.
He wants to travel as much as possible.
He wants to do something that tends to be less physical and more mental.
He doesn't really seem to care about getting big re-enlistment bonuses.
He doesn't want to be on a sub.

Like I said he's smart, very smart actually. I would be surprised if he doesn't score a 99 on his ASVAB. So, assuming he passes the medical and moral background, I believe he should qualify for everything.

What are some ratings ya'll suggest he should look into?

I don't think he'll find the sound of that job interesting.

How about your "friend" does the research on his own here. All of the stuff listed can be applied to any rating out there. It is up to him to find out what his interests are and what he would like to do, whether electronics, nuclear power, mechanics, and so forth.

This is another very vague question here and impossible to answer, because the possibilities are endless. If he really wants answers, he needs to get out there and look at his interests and start looking at different jobs and narrow it down from there. Second thing is to go to a recruiter and take an ASVAB, you won't know what you even QUALIFY for until you do that.

I'm already DEP'd in as STG. However I'm talking to my recruiters about changing it to HM.

What more detail do you need?

If you don't want physical, stay away from CS, MM, MT and any of the nuke ratings. HM can be quite physical, particularly if assigned to FMF. I saw very little physical that an ST had to do and it is mostly mental so why change?

Almost every rating has the opportunity to travel given your criteria of not going on subs which means MT is out of the question. Find something you think you will like and go for it.

Don't ST's (or is it just STS)have to take a shower every 6 hours? Big Grin That can be very exhausting after just a few days underway.

Nice. Sounds like my kind of job. What is the showering situation like on a Destroyer or Cruiser? How many minutes do you get? Is the water hot? Do you get one a day, or is it unlimited? Screw all the other morale and recreation programs. I'll take a hot 20 minute shower over everything else any day.

Yes. STS will wilt if not given a thorough watering every six hours. This has been known to make them very unhappy, as it cuts into their beddy-bye time, and seriously messes up their circadian rythms.

After a few days underway, though, they get used to the new rotation (sleep, shower, sleep, shower, watch, shower.....)

Meanwhile the poor engineman or whoever is in charge of making water is slaving away, sweating in the hole so the primadonnas can get their shower. Big Grin

I don't know about the "slaving" part. The evaporator usually ran pretty well, if someone hadn't tried to "make it run better", and I enjoyed babysitting it....I could usually get some admin or studying done.
