Hi I’m in DEP right now and I’m going off to boot Aug.18. There is a question that has been killing me.
How big are the Beds on the ships? I’m 6'4 and i know that i most likly won’t fit so just want to see how bad that might be. also how is "A"&"C" school? are they hard |

DONT GROW ANY MORE. If you do you might not ship on 18 Aug to bootcamp. I am 6'9" and just fit head to toe in the rack so you should be fine. As for school it depends on which schools. Nuke school is very hard. Most Navy schools are based on the lowest common denominator, meaning they teach from the very basics up. This way they don't have to worry about past experience, education, etc. Also a lot of the course work is computer based so you can go at your own speed. |

TMC,
Boomer or Fast attack? I found I had more head room ** the boomer, even more so than ** the carrier. I could barely get through the p***age way ** the fast boat t**ugh. |

I'm 5'10 so I had plenty of room in my rack on the Regan. I wouldn't worry too much about it, they are the size of any normal bed just not as much head room, don't sit straight up and try to get a higher bunk, don't get the bottom, NO GOOD! A & C schools are not hard, most navy tests are made to where a third grader could pass them, and the schools are fun. Good l***!

I'd rather have the bottom rack than top. Yeah on top you get head room, but you have the awkward climb into the rack, not to mention that you don't get a coffin locker.

Our top racks had coffins. |

At 6'4" the OP will be able to just swing in. At my height I would have never been able to get out of a bottom bunk. All the ships I've been on the top racks had coffin lockers. A lot of the newer ships are starting to get the newer racks. There was a post on these a while back. |

I did my summer cruise on the Ronald Reagan and none of the top racks (one of which I had) had coffin lockers. You were given an extra standup locker to compensate, but the space in it was no where near equal to the coffin locker's.
That is true he won't have the climbing in issue though. I was just thinking of my awkward climb since I'm only 5'3". |

Coffin:
extra storage space = good unable to sit up in rack = bad Pan: able to sit up = good less storage space = bad climb = bad impossible to totally encapsulate for darkness = bad Conclusion: Coffin = meh Pan = very bad therefore coffin > pan. QED |

Middle bunk is the best place...but then you need some seniority too. Never had a problem with a lower bunk either, you could just crawl in, which is nice after a night on the town.
I have seen coffin lockers on top bunks, but it is like a monkey with a football, just doesn't go together. Those without a coffin locker get a bigger standup, but don't the space like a coffin. However, expect a top bunk if you are a new sailor to a ship. I really don't see a reason or need to sit up in a bunk. If you want to sit up in a bunk, then join one of the other branches of service instead. The problem with sitting in a top bunk is that it means it is open to the compartment. Meaning dust bunnies and crap will tend to ac***ulate on your sleeping surface. |

I had a bottom bunk as a junior sailor reporting aboard my first ship. Major hookup from my LPO who just happend to be the berthing PO for the engineering side of the berthing... We all had coffin lockers and a standup locker as well in our compartment. Before we left on the Med we went to decooming ships and picked up some more standup lockers for the shop so we each had a steaming locker as well. I consider that being lucky.

The only down side to that bottom rack is that I was taller than the gals in my cube. In order to get inside the coffin rack was to sit on my knees to get uniforms and such out. It was nice that you could slide in and kind of roll out at reville. As a bonus to have a bottom rack is that if you hit rough seas you don't have far to fall. LOL. BTDT.
