Okay I recently DEP'ed in as an IT shipping in Feb. I've read every thread here about IT and some of my questions have been answered but I have a few more.
What is IT A school like? I'll be an E3, will this make any difference in my experience? How often and hard is PT? I've worked hard on my fitness and I'd like to keep it up. Can I work out on my own after hours? What about swimming? How's the chow (good, bad, ugly)? What kind of assignments can I possibly get out of A school (aside from being haze gray and underway)? I've heard ITs can basically be assigned anywhere, to any unit. Does that include NSW support, Seabees, NECC, etc.? Any and all answers are greatly appreciated. |

I'm not sure, as I couldn't find a definitive source, but it looks like A school is at Corry Station in Florida. That means it will be hot by time you get to the school, not a bad thing after just finishing a winter in Great Lakes.
As an E-3, you may be expected to be in charge of a section but it will make absolutely no difference academically. You will learn the same thing at the same time as an E-1 or E-2 going through the school. The advantage for you is that you will be getting TIR for third class while you are going to school. Every facility that I was at had some kind of gym and weight room that anyone on base could use. That will give you plenty of opportunity to maintain your physical status. Having never been to Corry Station, I cannot say how much free time you may have after class or what the food will be like. You just have to consider that the more people that have to be fed, the farther away from fine dining you get, it's just a matter of numbers. According to the Navy website, you can be assigned just about anywhere, except subs as there are no IT personnel on subs. While it is possible to get an assignment to the other types of duties you mentioned, you won't be disappointed if you set your expectations on haze gray and underway. Realistically, that's where a newbie belongs anyway. |

Actually I had heard that being an IT on a small boy was the best thing going because of all the different job aspects you get exposed to. I've just been wondering what the possibilities were for the job. Finding info on IT has been difficult (search google for "Navy IT" and you'll see what I mean). There's some general info out there but most of it doesn't really go beyond what my recruiter has already told me.

Have you read through here? Navychick08 is an IT I believe, and has quite a few posts up.

ACtually it looks like she's an IS. There are a couple of threads by others in the IT/CT/IS section that are helpful but they don't paint as complete a picture as I'd like.

apintortwo, I'll also be in your situation. I want to become an IT plus I'll be able to enlist as an E-3 soon.
Anyways, I wanted to add to the IT questions. What's a typical day for an IT like when you're deployed? Also how much time do we work, watch, and do other things? |
