Well using myself as an example... I'm 33(going to be 34 in bootcamp) and scored 70 on asvab and have about 90+ collage credits. I got in the navy but it took me 6 months get everything together. I had to get waivers for: jaw surgery, being a father and having two sleeves of tattoos(which I'm surprise they waived). My point is if you want it then who cares how hard it's to get in... just do it... The age is not the issue yet but the weight. Work on losing(the healthy way) 1.5 pounds a week for a year then start the enlistment(if you are going that route)process. Hell just go see a recruiter now and see what they say.

Just get in shape. I was in boot at 29 and it helped that i was in pretty good shape. For some reason, it seems to help bridge the age gap. It's a better example to set for the younger guys. Don't alienate yourself from the young guys. Never forget how you were at that age. I really respected the young guys I worked with in boot and also later in the EOD pipeline because at their age..nobody could have told me to get down and do pushups. hahaha. If you use your life experience as a good thing, I think it's a really rewarding experience. Other than that, it's funny since I'm a relatively new E-5 and my EODCS is only 18 months older than me! But, it's all good. Good luck.

First, keep working on the weight issue. Easy part is taking it off, hard part is keeping it off. Been there, doing that. Next, you say you almost finished school. I take it you mean college. If so, have you talked with an officer recruiter to see what they have to offer? Third, you say you want to join the Navy, but do yourself a favor and also talk to the Army, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard and see which has the most to offer. While being in the military is ultimately about what you can do for the country, there is nothing wrong with making sure you also getting the best deal for yourself as well. Finally, make sure your records are in order. By that, I mean you have a listing going back at least five years of where you lived, where you worked, who your neighbors were, who your boss was, and so forth. If you join and need a security clearance that information will come in handy. Good luck. |
