You are not going to be able to learn how to swim well enough in eight weeks to be able to pass the screening test. In addition you will have to wait a while to retake the ASVAB. There is an amazing amount of info using the find feature and visiting the EOD section on navy.mil / navy.com. This will be a long road for you.

I suggest that you ship to boot camp as a CS, or whatever rate you originally signed up for. Then during boot camp they will teach you how to swim, from there you can improve on your swimming. After boot camp graduation, go to CS A school and complete that training. Get to your first command and do your job, after some time you can take classes to help better your ASVAB score. Re-take the ASVAB and get the scores you need. Then if you are qualified for EOD, then you shouldn't have a problem getting into the program. It just might take some time.

Do not try yo postpone your ship date! You are lucky you got into the navy with a 41 ASVAB score. You can still get EOD, it will just take time. Do CS, study, and improve on your swimming. You'll get there if you really want it.

I'm in the same boat as you. Scored a 49 on the ASVAB. Selected YN(SS), I don't dislike this job, I am just hoping to get into submarine electronics eventually. I'm just happy I volunteered for submarine duty period.

I'm not saying don't try to go to the fleet as a CS then go EOD. But, as the EOD recruiter here on NSA Bahrain, I can tell you that the requirements to put in an EOD package from the fleet are getting more and more stringent. E-5 with less than 6 yrs. in is the maximum to put in a package. NO WAIVERS for this. So, if you really want EOD and do some research about the job, I'd wait and retake the ASVAB and try for an EOD contract. If you try to rush and go in as another rate you never know waht will happen. Our manning levels aren't as low as a lot of people think. We're CREO 2 at some levels. It also is a difficult school and you really need to be honest with yourself about that. I've put some ASVAB waivers in, but we're talking a point or two. You need to do really well on the PST to get a waiver. If it's what you want, then you'll have to work for it. But, IMHO, going to the fleet as a CS or another rate is rolling the dice. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Define this. They really dont teach you anything beyond the basic, and I mean very baasic. What he's looking at going from and to will require hours and hours of training, possibly with a trainer to learn proper form and different strokes.

Not impossible with the proper dedication, but not easy either. Especially if he is on sea duty.

I thought I remembered william saying you couldnt retake the ASVAB after you're in......

If he ever did say that he would be incorrect.

Although it may not happen every day there are people, who are already in the fleet, that do retake the ASVAB to try and improve their score, for the sole purpose of qualifying for a particular program.

Heck, In just the last two years I have two relatives that did just that. One made it into the program but the other one, even though she improved her ASVAB score, did not make it for other reasons.

Yes, during bootcamp you only learn the basics of swimming but after that he can improve on his technique during his own time.

Nope, used to be you couldn't retake it in DEP but even that has changed. As for taking it on active duty they even have a two week training to prepare for re-take (among other things).

The Navy didn't teach anyone how to swim in my BC. There were some who didn't know how, and our instructor, let 3 of us take them to the pool the day before, swim quals, and work with them, but that was it. from there you can improve on your swimming.

I know the Navy is looking for motivated E-5's, which the OP would be a long way from being.
