A little about me:
My GED was due to completing all 12 years (mostly enrolled in home school because I moved around a lot growing up), never dropped out, etc... and I have a high GPA to prove that as well. I'm 31 years old, and have an Associates degree in Electronic Engineering from ITT Technical Institute, as well as being certified as an Apple Certified Technician...I have about 10 years or so of PC Technical repair experience too (currently I AM employed as a PC Technician for a very large company) My Questions/Concerns: How do I make my desire to join the Navy in the capacity of a (IS) (intelligence specialist) a reality? Does my 2-year degree help at all or does that Navy offer a program to enroll me into a program to continue onward in acquiring my Bachelor's degree so I can eventually qualify while serving for awhile? ...Of course I would like to start at an elevated rating, but it would be nice to simply qualify first :-) I'm willing to enroll into any sort of training/program to make this happen, I just need to find out if this door of opportunity exists in light of me starting the journey with a GED & Associates degree... Any help appreciated! Thanks to everyone in advance. - Brett This message has been edited. Last edited by: catherine0830, |

Hey cleverest,
I enlisted in Febuary as an IS so maybe I can help a little. I'm sure others will join in soon. There are a few things that you need to qualify for the IS rating. Your VE+AR score on the ASVAB must be at least 108. You must have normal color perception, must be a U.S. Citizen, both the applicant and his/her immediate family members must be U.S. citizens, Moral turpitude offense(s) are generally disqualifying. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED, CPT, home study or other equivalency). If not a diploma graduate, applicant must provide a high school transcript verifying successful completion of the 10th grade. As for having a Associate's Degree, you qualify for the rank of E-3. The Navy has tuition assistance which pays for school while you are in AD. There is also the Navy College Fund, you should ask a recruiter about that one. I'm not too familiar with the specifics. Hope this helped. |

Since you have your Associates, your GED isn't an issue anymore (unless of course all the course work required for your associates is below 100 level---which is unlikely
No your degree is immaterial in getting a rating in the Navy. Score high enough on the ASVAB and you write your own ticket (provided the rating your desire is available at the time you DEP). |

Unfortunately these days (or should I say this far into the FY), all GED slots are taken or closed. But since the OP has over 15 credits (seeing that he indicated that he has an associates degree) it's a non-issue for the OP. |

Good point SgtLtUSMC.
To the OP- If you qualify for the rating then be prepared to wait a a very long time to ship to RT. I enlisted in the second week of Febuary and I don't ship until the end of October. A friend of mine enlisted the first week of March and he doesn't ship until the end of March 2010. He qualified for the IS rating too. |

The only thing I will bring up is whether your campus of ITT was nationally accredited when you graduated. Not all campuses are accredited and I believe this is a fairly recent development for ITT Tech (being accredited). That could be the wrench in the works towards the degree counting for anything.

All ITT campuses are accredited. However, ITT is nationally accredited by the DETC. Believe it or not, national accreditation is the less prestige form of accreditation. Regional accreditation, which includes all state schools and many private non-profit colleges, is the gold standard. Many government positions will accept NA degrees. I believe that the Air Force only accepts RA degrees. |
