I believe only officers have rank, like boats said enlisted have rate(IE Making rate means getting promoted) and also like he said your rating is your job.

I think of it like this. On pretty much every document that I fill out it asks this question "Rank/Rate" I always put E-3/MASN and never had a problem. In fact I am told to fill out my 1408's exactly like that.

Chief, After I posted the above and logged off for my weekly maintaince on my puters, I realized I could have done a better job of explaining what BM1 meant. Taking into consideration what I posted about "Ratings" and "Rates", let me try again. BM1='shorthand for"rating"//"rate"-E-6/Petty Officer First Class. Now with that said, the Navy has NEVER referred to the enlisted side of the house with the term "rank". My edition of the Bluejacket's Manual that I received in.....,do I have to tell From the Navy website; Enlisted Rates The use of the word "rank" for Navy enlisted personnel is incorrect. The term is "rate." The rating badge is a combination of rate (pay grade, as indicated by the chevrons) and rating (occupational specialty, as indicated by the symbol just above the chevrons). The insignia here represents a Petty Officer First Class (the rate) who is a Boatswain's Mate (the rating). A rating badge is worn on the left upper sleeve of all uniforms in grades E-4 through E-6. Chief Petty Officers (E-7 through E-9) wear collar devices on their white and khaki uniforms, and rating badges on their Service Dress Blues. An explanation of the the enlisted rates is hyperlinked from the chevrons in the image to the left, and an explanation of the various Navy occupational specialities is hyperlinked from the rating symbol, in this case the crossed anchors. I know the pix referred to in the above 'copy and paste' will not display, so here is the link; http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/ranks/rankrate.html So it is NOT a "black shoe" thing. Now a question. Do they still issue "striker" patches/insignias for those that have completed "A" school but are still an E-3 ? BoatsBM1 |

Boats,
It's been years since I read the BJM so you may have me on that one. I just remember all the forms had Rate/Rank on them, Also, you know us airdales, we never follow the rules. Almost forgot to answer your question. Yes, there still are "striker" badges for E-3 and below. |

Thanks for the clarification. One the basis of this, my ASVAB score was 89, my rate is E-3, and my rating is OS |

WANT to be AWH, but with the munchkins I don't believe I could handle the seperation for years at a time. |

A 'Rated' man is E-4 thru E-9. Non-Rated is E-1 thru E-3. A school grads and AN/SN/CN/FN passed but not advanced are 'designated strikers'. Your 'rate' is what you do... your 'pay grade' is the level you do it at.... more or less.

98 - OSC, with a PJ designator
Actually an E1 - E3 can be rated. Just has to go through "A" School. I was rated a OSSA upon getting to my first ship. Being rated as an E2 has some distinct advantages over being undesignated. Being on a minehunter I was needed for my OS ability over undesignated. I got to miss cranking while underway. Seperation won't be for years. A deployment is never typical, but roughly a six month cruise every 18 months. Not set in stone and mission dependent. Also depends what you do. I hate it when my 4 year old asks me why "Do you have to go to the desert?" It hurts, but remember why you are doing it. At a little over 11 years I decided I didn't want continue being away. I had made Chief the year earlier and it was a tough decision. So I took a govt job. Will retire will my Navy years toward my pension and will retire at a higher pay rate. Remember this after you get your clearance, if you are lucky to be in a rate that has one. Typically the CT, IT and sometimes YN, OS, and a few others. |
