Hello,
I am currently a Navy DEPer, I am currently in the AZ program. (aviation maintinence admin.) My question is: Are there any Aircrew positions for this rating. Can I volunteer for Aircrew with that rating? |

Ahoy Kcoreyc,
No and No. Now if you want to go Aircrew, Take a jaunt over to the Nav Air Forumn down a little ways. (Its ABOVE The Navy Reserve.) There are Threads on "WHY YOU SHOULD NOT GO AZ" and Plenty of Info on Aircrew School. Just look for me...Pizzadude. Just three Questions: 1. Can you Swim Right Now? Basic Aircrew starts in the Pool and those that cant swim...Ends right there on DAY1. 2. What Made you WANT to Go AZ??? A Few Realities that Po1 Recruiter Forgot or did not Mention. Adventure,Job Satisfaction, Respect: None None None!!! This Rate is Full-Up, SLOWEST Promotions, and the Worst Part is WHEN YOU FAIL A-school/Aircrew, Guess where you might wind Up? (An AZ!) 3. NOW...Are you Willing to Go Back to the Recruiter and INFORM Him/Her that you are very willing to WAIT untill you Get Aircrew Written into your Contract??? Pizzadude Boston Mass. |

Pizza, What if he doesn't qualify (vision, drugs use, moral, ht/wt, etc)? Should he still hold out for Aircrew? Too many variables go into the classification process to make blanket statements like that. OP, first why aircrew? second do you want aviation if you don't qualify - then AZ may be your only option. Also AZs can become network administrators down the road. finally if you don't qualify for Aircrew you can also go CS (Cook) they can become aircrew down the road also. |

Here is what happend at meps?
I am joining the Navy to get a career in aviation. I went down and took the physical the lady in the vision dept wrote down that I was 20/25 not-correctable.( which is BS ) When the classifier said I did not qualify for any "hands on" aviation jobs, I asked them if I could take the refract over again, because I have always been 20/20 up till that point. They said NO! I then told them I was not interested and wanted a second opinion. After talking to my recruiter over the phone, I fell for his tacict, when he said just sign up for this....and we will get your vision checked with a local phys. and put in your job change request. I have since been checked out as 20/20 with a local Dr. here and had the meps refract form filled out by this Dr. The only problem is that the recruiter is now working very slowly to come up with any thing new for me. I really have no true desire to be an AZ desk jockey. My actual preference is to go AW or AV-aircrew. I just want to be in the blue skies basically. |

Why not try for AE or if you don't mind getting your hands dirty AD or AM and try to become a flight engineer. From what I've seen on these sights they let you become a F/E in training from the get go.

Okay thanks for the extra info Kcoreyc:
NOW HEAR THIS....NOW HEAR THIS>>>> If You Dont Want to Go AZ...LEAVE NOW!!!If you Hear the Words: Well We'll have to See About Rate Changes Later after You get to Boot Camp...MMMKay??? Also do not buy into any Guilt trips like...After All I did to Get you This...? You Owe the Navy/Recruiters NOTHING Kcoreyc. The Navy will always be here. Now another Tidbit on Recruiting Contracts is When you finish the Meps office your Job is set in Stone. Also you WILL NOT be remembered for anything after the Ink is Dried on your paper. Meps is just like the Post Office: Just keep it moving. AZ rate is will you Shall wind up after Boot. No dreams of changing contracts at RTC unless you are going SEALS/EOD. Aircrew is wide open for AW's/Flight Engineers/Inflight Techs...NOT COOKS. I flew for 4years and Never Met a Flying CS. Now for the Bad News about AZ Rate. This job is where we send the A-school Failures and Aircrew Drops. AZ's are Dime a Dozen and requires the LEAST amount of Training. With That Said, either give Recruiter ANOTHER CALL or Go Look for the AirForce/Air National Guard Opportunities and Mention your interest in C-130's, C-17 Loads, and C-5 Flight Engineers. AF Helo's are in Dire Need of Aerial Door Gunners...How does Dropping off Seals/Pj's and Rescueing Downed Pilots Sound Appealing to You? Anyone Else says Anything Else about AZ's. Here is what the Recruiter uses to Determine Open Jobs. Its called an ECMO (Enlisted Community Management Objective) you will find this Info on Military.com/ Hit: FIND/ Insert: ECMO or CREO. The Topic is Called: Anyone Looking For This? (pizzadude) AZ Career Info: AZ 3/3/3 2 Overmanned/Overmanned/Overmanned...No Promotions. AW Aircrew Info AW 1/2/3 Undermanned E-4/Manned E-5/Overmanned E-6. (I never met an AW that didnt make E5 or E6 Later.) Choice is Yours. Pizzadude Boston Mass. |

Never flew on a C-9? Kcoreyc: Talk with your recruiter about putting in a DEP action request to change your rating. Ask him to call MEPS to verify you qualify (i.e. they recieved the updated eye exam). If you still don't qualify ask about AV, AD, AM as has been stated above. These are all aviation rates and unless something drastic has changed (I doubt it), they do not require 20/20 vision. If in RTC you are re-evaluated with 20/20 you can then request Aircrew with any of these rates. Keep in mind that classifiers don't like to give bad news (i.e. your scores don't qualify you or something else is disqualifying) so they may have just told you about the vision and not the "other" things. This is why you have to get the recruiter to call MEPS and ask if you even qualify before you can ask to change. If you don't qualify then discuss other options with your recruiter if you don't want to go into the admin field. |

NEC Manual:
AZ's can also go aircrew as loadmaster. I wouldnot recommend going this route, as like with CS, there are very few of them. You would have to be extremely lucky to get assigned to one of these units. |

No I never had the time. (Please tell me you served alcohol on your Flights.) Anyway this 8289 Transport Safety Specialist Sounds alot Like a "Reservist Job" than Active Duty. Again NO AZ's Fly.... I dont Care who says What. That "AZ" person is the smallest exception short of Flat Out Bribing an Aircrew Detailer. (Do Bother Trying That...You cant afford them.... and I was Rich!) KcoreyC...Go Be an (AvTech,Mech, Airframe,AW) Go P-3s, and You get a set of Gold Wings, FATTEST PAYCHECKS, and More Sea Stories for Life. Pizzadude MilRcrtCom.DotCom. Boston Mass. |
