Hi everyone, I had a few questions, I thought there might be a chance that they could be answered on this forum- I recently took my DLAB and scored well- well enough to qualify for any language. So here goes-
1. can i choose which language I learn at the Defence Language Institute of monterey california?
2. can i learn more than one language? the reason i ask is because the courses at DLI are long and time consuming- and i am not sure if the Navy would be willing to put that much time into me. I am currently a DEPer so there are alot of thing's i still don't know from lack of experience.
3. i am currently going for SEAL training, if however in the unfortunate event that i fail- and that i go back to the fleet for a year or so- what job would i do then? if i had the choice- i would select CTI as my "back up" job.
4. and i am sorry- this is such a nooby question, what are the differences between the various CT jobs? CTI sounds great to me since i am a lover of languages- however the idea of sitting in a cubicle all day with no travel repulses me.

It costs too much. If you wash out of BUD/S, you will probably go back to the fleet for more than a year. BM sounds like a good back up job. Seriously, we can't tell you what would be a good job for you.

However, every time my ship carried spooks, they left immediately when we pulled into port. For the rest of this question, USE THE FIND BUTTON and do some research.

I just had one other question-
it does not make a lot of sense to me that i cannot choose a language to learn, i mean i already speak some russian and chinese, i have no knowledge of arabic whatsoever- are they going to allocate me to a language i have no interest in learning- and no history in as opposed to learning a language which i already have some knowledge in? also if i re-enlist than can i go back to language school for another language? if this is not possible than perhaps i could pursue another language as a part of regular college? i am sorry- i seem to be offending you guys with my questions- but bare in mind please- these are questions which my recruiter did not know the answers to, and so as a last resort i came here.

they will have you learn a language THEY want you to learn. they don't give a damn about whatYOU want. they are filling THEIR needs.
If yoru desires and their needs coincide, great. if not.. tough noogies.

while it is possible to be sent back to DLI for a second language do NOT expect it to happen. they spent time and money teaching you one already, they want to recoup that money. they aklso don;t want youout of the loop another year or longer learning a new language.

ummm.... no, I just don't want to sound cocky- by saying something like "when i earn my trident" or "when i become a navy SEAL" blah blah blah, I am trying to be humble- i do not know if I will succeed in earning the trident- the odds are against me- but that won't stop me from trying and putting my heart into it. on another note- like i said- it wouldn't make sense for the military to have me learn a language i have no knowledge in- than learn a language which i already know a little bit of- it saves them time, money and resources to have me learn a language which i am already somewhat knowledgable in already!

You'll learn quickly that the Navy does a lot of things that do not make sense. Deal with it. Thats life. Violin

And... WTF is up with your writing?

To the OP I have a few questions...

Do you speak chinese or russian as a native?

Picking a little bit here and there in conversation and out of books doesnt really match you in the area of a native speaker.

Get used to the phrase "Neeeds of the Navy" as thats what you will always be under.

If when you enlist and then head off to boot camp first thing is make sure you'll qualify for a security clearence,

Then to DLI where "needs of the navy" at that time will most likely effect what languages you get to choose from/have chosen for you.

On a regular basis things changes at the School Houses for all jobs fairly regulary in some ways so no one for sure can tell you what will be by the time you may get to DLI(just taking and scoring well on the DLAB is only a portion of what will come before getting there).

Why not focus on getting into the Navy and getting thru boot camp first?

One step at a time...Boot camp...A School(first language)...out to the fleet for quite a while...then who knows maybe more languages if you stay in longer....gotta make things worth it for the Navy to spend yet more money on you(and that typically comes with reenlisting somewhere along the line)

I wont even touch on you ever becoming an SO in the Navy.
