I served 6 years as an Aegis ORTS/FCS FC, got out as an E-5 in 2005 to attend college. Got my bachelors and now I'm trying to get back into the Navy and the recruiter tells me the Navy isn't taking prior service and that I should join the reserve instead. I've had different people tell me different things, whats the deal?
I've also got an RE-R1 code.

Recruiters advice is about accurate. There are few openings on active duty and they just offered an early out up to 15 months to get off active duty and enter reserves. Not hard to figure from that the active duty side is over manned and looking to make cuts anywhere and everywhere.
It is not entirely accurate to say the Navy is not taking back NAVETS. It is mostly accurate though and to get back in can only be done with much difficulty.
I wrote about my experience trying to get back to active duty here. Its a long, painful process with very little chance of success. Things have changed even since I went through the process very recently. Like the other poster said, the Navy is trying to get rid of folks.
Ah, not surprised, seems every employer is cutting back except Walmart and the food service... politicians are always concerned with budget cutting, while first term congressmen make 174,000 a year for doing an inept job.
Thanks for the info tho!
Go Reserves, get in and then pursue the Active route. Like myself - going in the back door is the only way for Prior Service. The Reserve are targeting us.
The Reserves have Active Reserve Slots too.....Drop a 368 request for Active after you drill some or go FTS in the Reserves - Full Time Active Duty Reserve with Active Pay...There are other programs too.
I am heading in the back door because with the Navy the Front Door is LOCKED!!!
Good Luck -
