My recruiter is telling me that if I join as an OSVET I may not be able to choose my rating. How accurate is that? He says if I go in under the NAT program I get to choose my job but then I would have to attend boot camp. Is this some skulduggery or is he telling it straight?

Usually as an OSVET they don't mess with you too much, being prior service. My roommate was a e-5 in the corps. then came over to the navy, and he got to pick what he did. If you were prior service OSVET (other service Veterin) then you don't have to attend bootcamp because you have already passed that phase of the military in another service

Depends on how long he's been out. His recruiter has all the best info.

I completed USMC boot camp and was separated at school. I was in for 177 days so I'm not a veteran...but I am prior service. I graduated boot camp in 1988, however. They are telling me I have to go NAT because boot was so long ago. No biggie. I'll go to Navy boot, get in shape, teach the younguns how to do things and I'll get the job I want. Smile

Army , Spouse: Servicemember/Retiree

Howed you get from the Army to the Marines?
Now you have me confused.

Navy boot is very different from the Marines boot so you may just be at a disadvantage in some things, like an open mind. The disaplins you learned in the Marines should serve you well but the physical part isn't anywhere near the same.

USS Liberty, Never Forget.

I am currently an army spouse. I was in the Marines way back when, however.

Well, I don't know what you mean about the open mind stuff. Marines use naval terminology for everything so no prob there. If you mean that the Marines are kind of like the Borg well, yeah, that was one of the BIG problems I had with being a Marine. I'd look over and see the sailors laughing and remaining human and I was stuck with the rod-in-the-anus robot squad. I remember thinking "Jeez, I chose the wrong team here." I think I am fully prepared to embrace the navy way. I was watching that show 'Carrier' on PBS. A lot of the sailors complained about cleaning stuff up and having to follow orders. Dude, after 15 years of marriage and kids I can't wait to get paid to clean up and follow orders. Right now I do it for free!

As far as the physical part goes, I can't imagine the navy being harder on my body than the Marine Corps was. I think I'll be ok.

My guess about an open mind would be in relation to this comment:

I'll go to Navy boot, get in shape, teach the younguns how to do things and I'll get the job I want.

You will have an advantage as far as military stuff goes, but there still are differences and a lot of changes between 1988 and today. Just keep an open mind vs going in with an "I've been there done that" type of attitude.

Also as far as "Carrier" goes, that series really only depicts a few certain individuals and not the Navy as a whole. Yes, there were complainers and so forth, but you get that everywhere, any branch to every civilian job. There was alot on that series that was left out because of the focus on a few people.

Roger that. When I said "show them how to do things" I meant that in the broadest possible sense. Mostly by showing an example of keep your ears open and your mouth shut and espousing teamwork and self-discipline. I figure those values are all good things to have in any branch of the military. Smile

That's not how it was when I joined last year, maybe it has changed. Have you called different recruiters to see if that story remained consistant?

Our local MEPS told me that...I can only hope for it to be different. Once this so called Prior Service Hold is up and our Navy decides whether they will let us back in or not.

I toild MEPS, I swabbed decks the first time and I will do it again, just let me in.

They said, I will have to take what ECM offers..
It has been over a month at ECM.....whenever they get it to it

I'm not going to lie and say the rigid part that you described is phony, because there is truth in that. But if you couldn't find time to have fun (whether during work or after), then something was wrong with you or the leadership.

Yes, Sailors have more fun Wink and are professional at the sametime. But that don't mean that they don't have their share of leadership (chiefs and officers) who have that proverbial stick up their you know what!

I joined the Army Reserve after the Corps, and it's light years relaxed than the Corps and even the Navy. But they still had those "a-holes" in there, whether they were fair or not.

Just food for thought. Good luck in your transition!
