I am applying for NROTC for the class of 2014. I plan on getting a tattoo on my ribs sometime before college or during college but it might be when I have already been accepted to the program. Is this possible?
Please advise. |

Why would you have that in your future plans? Your body is a temple, and you should never paint grafitti on a church.

Save the tatoos for after you get out. No worries then, right? Afterall, this isn't same Navy it was 10-15 or more years ago. Getting tatoos nowadays can get you permanently DQed depending on the content and character of the tat. Besides, will you think that tatoo is as cool in 25-30 years? No, probably not.

Concur with TMC.
Now, if you are hell-bent on one anyway you need to run the design up the chain after you review US Navy instructions on the subject. Your instructors should be able to help you out here. |

I have one whole arm that is a sleeve plus many other tattoos all over. When i came in i had 1. I do agree about haveing something tasteful but if its on your ribs no one should see it anyways.

I don't recall all the rules, etc., but I do recall that one was if you had one on the body it could not be seen through both a white uniform blouse and undershirt (or underwear if located in that region). |

Even if no-one can see it, it can not be offensive.
besides, 10438413, you're Air Force, not Navy according to your profile. Navy tattoo rules are different from other branches, and have become a lot stricter over the last few years |

Ya know, these days every soccer mom around has a tattoo. They are no longer unique. Its almost to the point where youre unique if you choose NOT to get one.

I doubt anyone will ding you for having a tattoo in ROTC (although I agree with the others that's it's poor taste and headwork, and I've been through NROTC). I doubt anyone will even care or know if you keep it covered. I doubt anyone will care if they see it. Having said that, I'd still play it safe and let the ROTC instructor/class advisor know your plans.
Here's the instruction: NAVADMIN 110/06 (I think that's the latest one). Here's the applicable verbiage: "A. CONTENT. TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS LOCATED ANYWHERE ON THE BODY THAT ARE PREJUDICIAL TO GOOD ORDER, DISCIPLINE, AND MORALE OR ARE OF A NATURE TO BRING DISCREDIT UPON THE NAVAL SERVICE ARE PROHIBITED. FOR EXAMPLE, TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS THAT ARE OBSCENE, SEXUALLY EXPLICIT, AND OR ADVOCATE DISCRIMINATION BASED ON SEX, RACE, RELIGION, ETHNIC, OR NATIONAL ORIGIN ARE PROHIBITED. IN ADDITION, TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS THAT SYMBOLIZE AFFILIATION WITH GANGS, SUPREMACIST OR EXTREMIST GROUPS, OR ADVOCATE ILLEGAL DRUG USE ARE PROHIBITED. B. LOCATION. NO TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS ON THE HEAD, FACE, NECK, OR SCALP. THE NECK AREA FOR PURPOSES OF THIS REGULATION IS ANY PORTION VISIBLE WHEN WEARING A CREW NECK T-SHIRT OR OPEN COLLAR UNIFORM SHIRT. IN ADDITION, OTHERWISE PERMISSIBLE TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS ON THE TORSO AREA OF THE BODY SHALL NOT BE VISIBLE THROUGH WHITE UNIFORM CLOTHING. C. SIZE. INDIVIDUAL TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS EXPOSED BY WEARING A SHORT SLEEVE UNIFORM SHIRT SHALL BE NO LARGER IN SIZE THAN THE WEARER S HAND WITH FINGERS EXTENDED AND JOINED WITH THE THUMB TOUCHING THE BASE OF THE INDEX FINGER. TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS THAT EXCEED SIZE CRITERIA ARE WAIVERABLE PROVIDED THEY DO NOT VIOLATE THE CONTENT AND/OR LOCATION CRITERIA."
