I leave for bootcamp next month, Quartermaster is my rate. I had a few questions about the job. How hard will it be to be on a small boat unit/ amphibious or beach master unit after " A " School. Anything in that categorie.

As for the LCU, LCAC "wet sides." They are almost exclusively QM1/QM2 billets. The crafts usually only have 1 QM aboard; not enough space to train up new QMSN's.

My opinion, you are way better off starting out on a ship anyways. There is no way you can learn your rate fully on any of those smaller platforms. The cores of the QM rate i.e. plotting on charts/computers, rules of the road, calculating CPA's, range and bearing taking, QMOW qual, making the Boatswain's mates and bridge team coffee, telling the BMOW what time sunset is, doing time checks on the 1MC etc. don't apply like they would on large platform ships.

P.S. Nice avatar, but rule of thumb for the Navy, (and to save you some drama) don't display Chiefs anchors (especially with twin screws) unless you are a Chief.

Good advice on the avatar, but those aren't screws on top of the Anchor, they're stars.

My BMCM always refers to them as his twin screws, or the "constellations on my collars."

Sounds good, although he/she is the first one I heard of in almost 30 years of service that called their stars "screws".

He's an interesting character, excellent person to have backing you up, just don't be on the business end of his a$$ chewings! He can make grown men cry.

To the OP and the original question, I looked at the June CMS reqs and there are Riverine squadron billets for QMSN's. I don't know how easy it is to pick up for a first command, but they do exist.
