I'm enlisting as E-3. I graduated with a non-technical bachelors from a prestigious school with dismal grades. Both the majors and the grades are holding me back from being a competitive OCS candidate. However, I have very near perfect ASVAB scores, 1520/1600 SAT, D-1 competitive swimmer, and despite my gpa, a strong work/internship/volunteer resume. I got my stuff together this last year (though too late to do much about my gpa) and I'm dedicated to making something of myself. It has been my dream to be a Navy officer, but now I'm wondering if it's possible in the near future at all. What would I need to do to make myself a competitive candidate for Navy OCS? Is there someway to counter my aweful GPA through experience, Naval class rank, or anything else? And what does the time frame look like on this? Will I have to wait four years, or is this something I can do if I am dedicated enough right out of A school or something? I know I'm ignorant on most of these subjects, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
You are going to have a tough road to hoe with a low GPA. While other factors can overcome it your big one will be sustained superior performance. However, if you are below minimum GPA for the officer programs then even that won't help. You could look at working on a Masters but will need to ensure you have a high GPA which can be difficult as a junior Sailor with a deployment schedule.
No one can really give you a time frame for this. Have you talked with an officer recruiter to determine if you will have a chance down the road if you enlist?
