Hello All!

I am DEP-ping in to the Navy on the 22nd of September. I don't know what my job will be; I scored high on my ASVAB and have been told I qualify for the Nuclear Power Program, although my main interest is in being a Hospital Corpsman.

Here's my question. I have always had a great interest in Military Color and Honor Guards. I know the Navy has each, and I would love to become a part of it.

How do I go about joining the Color Guard and/or the Honor Guard? Can you join both? Does Rating play a factor in eligibility for the Honor or Color Guards?

When i was it - it was the "luck of the draw" if you got into a special company. It was literally i got off of the bus and everyone in that group was now a state flags company. I didnt have any choice.

Are you talking about boot camp here or the US Navy's Honor Guard? I'm not sure entirely about the Navy, but my friends son went to Washington DC as part of the Army's Honor Guard. He is not a member of the guard but with support of the team, but even for that he had to be recommended for the job.

I would bet that is the same case here, you have to be one super squared away sailor and believe it would be a recommendation to get in.

Okay, here goes.

If you are talking about the Color Guard/Honor Guard during your navy career then you do that when you get a duty station. Most bases should have their own Color/Honor Guard team. But if your talking about the ones you see doing the ceremonies for the president or other high chain of command then those guys are the Navy Ceremonial Guard. That you have to be selected right out of bootcamp. Do you DEP or ship on Sep 22nd? Getting an interview with the Ceremonial Guard is a hit or miss becuase they come when they need bodies and you can't request it whie in the fleet. I had the oppertunity but they wouldnt take my rating. There are a lot of things that can rule you out. First is no shorter then 5'9. And you do go to Washington D.C. for 2 years and put your A school on hold.

Now if your talking about boot camp Color Guard then that just luck of the draw but you have to be selected for a 900 division first. Just like what dbil said. I was in that group. They are the state flags.

So there's two answers to your question. Hope I gave you what you where looking for. If anything else just ask.
