When I depped in i was classified as AECF, I'm like 99% positive of that, but now my recruiter says, Oh, I'm in EL4 which includes AECF, but there is a few other ratings i could get into such as CTN and others he couldn't think of. WTF! I leave for GL tomorrow, can anyone help me understand what he's saying.

Pull out your contract and read exactly what it says. That will be your answer.

EL4???? Never heard of that with respect to AECF. Did you went into AECF via the Natl Call to Service program? There are some differences if you've gone into AECF via NCS.

Yes, check your contract and see what it says.

And here's a link to the Navy regulation that includes AECF, dated Sept 2006; so far it still shows only 2 ratings under AECF: ET or FC

Mrose, I don't know if you're still around or not, but I did some searching on this and I found a NavAdmin that references EL4. The message is from June 2007 and dealt with enlistment bonuses. The link to the message is here: Link

Essentially, enlisting with AECF as a rating and enlisting as an EL4 are 2 distinctly different things.

The reference to the EL4 was in the category of a type of enlistment called "Job Occupational Grouping" Enlistment and here is the text from that section (see item E):
quote:
(4) THE JOB OCCUPATIONAL GROUPING (JOG) ENLISTMENT OPTION GUARANTEES
CLASSIFICATION IN ONE OF SEVERAL RATINGS WITHIN AN OCCUPATION COMMUNITY. THE
INDIVIDUAL WILL BE ASSIGNED A SPECIFIC RATING FROM THE JOG DURING RECRUIT
TRAINING. WHILE IN DEP, INDIVIDUALS WILL STATE HIS/HER PREFERENCES ON THE
ENLISTMENT GUARANTEES FORM (NAVCRUIT 1133/52). FINAL RATING DETERMINATION,
BASED ON NEEDS OF THE NAVY AND THE RATING AVAILABILITY, WILL BE MADE AT RTC.
SAILORS SELECTING A RATING WITHIN THE JOG ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE JOG EBSR
LISTED IN PARAGRAPH 12. THERE ARE SIX JOG’S. THE GROUPINGS AND ASSOCIATED
RATINGS ARE:
(A) SURFACE ENGINEERING (SENG): DC, EN, GSM, HT (INCLUDES BOTH SG AND
ATF), MM AND MR.
(B) ADMINISTRATIVE AND SUPPORT (ADSP): AZ, PS, SK, AND YN.
(C) AVIATION DECK (ADEK): ABE, ABF, AND ABH.
(D) AVIATION MECHANICAL (AMEK): AD, AM, AME, AND AS.
(E) ELECTROINCS FOUR YEAR (EL4): AV, CTM, IT, AND STG.
(F) ELECTRONICS SIX YEAR (EL6): AECF, CTN, AND STG.

And so it's very important to check your contract and see what it says you are enlisting for. You should have a page in your contract that says "Enlistment Guarantees" and also see if your contract says you are enlisting for 4 yrs with a 2 year extension or just 4 years.

With an EL4 designation, you would be signed up for a 4 year enlistment and once you get to boot camp you would be assigned one of the following ratings: AV, CTM, IT, or STG.

If you have an EL6 designation, then you would have a 6 year enlistment and at boot camp would be assigned one of these ratings: AECF, CTN, or STG (and if it was AECF at boot camp you'd find out either FC or ET).

And so, bottom line, is that you should clarify any questions you have about your contract when you go to MEPS tomorrow. Make sure you understand exactly what you signed for and tell them what you thought you signed for, and see what the classifiers can do for you there.

i have a fairly new recruiter, when i asked to see my contract, the page with my rating was absent, i remember being at meps and the classifier showed me aecf and nuke... i picked aecf, but the chart in my recruiters office said aecf for like my first 2.5 months in dep, then he changed it to el4, and said oh, its in the same thing, maybe he was mistaken and meant to write el6. my contract is an 8 year enlistment, i don't see why it would be that if i was a el4... also i scored a 92 on the asvab, why would they put me in the 4 year electronic program, when one of my options was n fact the nuke program.... either way, when at meps tomorrow i'm pretty sure they go over my contract again...

You should not be having to ask your recruiter to see a copy of your contract. When you DEP'd in you should have been given a copy of your contract to keep for your records.

Just make sure you are satisfied with the contract you have BEFORE you start signing papers tomorrow. That is part of the process at MEPS the second time around, to make sure that you understand what it is you are contracting with the government for, for the next x years of your life.

And the 8 years is a combination of active and in-active reserves status. And so only 4 or 6 years of that time is usually active, at least for the first enlistment.

as for the 4/6 year active enlistement, i know that, i just thought everyone only had 2 of inactive reserve, i have 6 active, 2 inactive, i wasnt confused on my job until about a week ago, on a dry erase board in my recruiters office, i noticed he changed my rating from aecf, which was written down for a very long time, on my id he made for me it says aecf, and in my contract im almost positive it said it too, (cant be 100% until tomorrow) then he changed it to el4 out of the blue.

I was offered that same rate when i was sitting in front of the classifier but i wanted AECF and made sure he searched for it before settling.

It makes me wonder about my status now, my card says AECF, my contract say AEF/AECF, have the 2 year extension for active duty as well as the enlistment bonus for AECF and my college credits.

Hmm... maybe i'll call my recruiter just to confirm.

You shouldn't need to. If on the Enlistment Guarantees page of your contract, it lists AEF-Advanced Electronics/Computer Field Guarantee AND you have the 2 year extension, then that is what you have contracted for.

Only reason I said that was due to mrose saying his was AECF and then got changed, but that he needs to clarify it first.

I made sure everything was in my contract before i signed it.

Thanks for the insight nwig.

Funny, my recruiter just called me about having to come in because of a initial we missed at MEPS on my contract.

Talked to him about EL4, he said that when i had gone through MEPS (last week of September) it was a newly created "group" rate for the needs of the Navy. It was created for a way for the Navy to quickly ship people if they wanted too. With EL4 i could have shipped end of Nov. and with AECF first opening was March of '08.

He didn't have much details beyond that but i am meeting him this evening to initial the part we missed and I'll see if i can drum up anymore details on it for other recruits.
