I am currently a Commercial Multi-Engine pilot, and a 22yr old with 3 semesters left until I graduate with a Bachelors in Political Science and Economics. Initially I was going to join the Guard and fly 135's or something of the sort for a little while and then transition to the airlines where my dad works now. However, I had always wanted to fly Navy as my father was formerly an F-18c and A-7 pilot before he went to work for Delta. Some recent events have pushed me more towards a longer commitment and more pride in serving my country and I am just beginning to explore my options, and reality of even doing so. I was wondering if anyone here is familar with AOC or how to attain Officership in order to fly in the Navy. I am going to meet with a recruiter sometime next week, but i figured I could throw this up here and see what responses people in the field have for me. Any input and advice is appreciated, Thank you!

You'll find the most specialized info for the aviation community at airwarriors. You're certainly eligible for OCS once you graduate. Whether you're competitive is a different story, and is all the more important nowadays, where a lot of folks want in.
Make sure the person you speak with is an Officer Recruiter as opposed to an Enlisted Recruiter. He'll eventually want you to take the ASTB, a physical, and Physical Readiness Test, among others. There's lots of OCS gouge as to what to expect at OCS and, I think, what makes a competitive OCS package, at the unofficial navy OCS website (google usnavyocs). There's nothing wrong with your degree, but your grades need to be good and your background (extracurricular activities, leadership roles, community service, etc.) needs to be good. Your flight experience means next to nil, although if you get in and get a pilot slot, it will definitely help you. |
