Cool

Great to stop by Gerry and offer encouragement to the DEP'ers. They're all coming up to take our place.

I recall my first blunt meeting with military saltiness. Our bus that had picked us up from the train deport arrived at the receiving shed at NTC San Diego. The new sailors awaiting in-processing that had arrived just a couple of hours before us, and still in civilian clothing, all gave us the hoo haa. So much for time in service. That was 58 years ago.

You guys realize that your time in DEP counts toward your time in service. When you look at a paychart you will see people with more time in service get paid more than a person in the same paygrade with less time.

Heman,

It does not count for time in service, it only count for pay purposes only. If you have 9 month of DEP and do four years you will only have four years of service. Pay and actual time of service is two different things and should not be confused. In other words, if you are going to retire you will still have to do twenty years of active duty time in order to retire. When you do retire your retirement check will be calculated as if you had 20 years plus the amount of time you had in DEP, but you still have to do the full 20 years on active duty.

Gotcha Chief. I knew it counted for something and I overheard some people in admin say something about it counting for TIS but then again I was by the copy machine.

Heman,

Don't sweat it.

For all you DEP'ers out there, TIS is Time In Service, which doesn't start until you step foot in boot camp. TIR is Time In Rate, that doesn't start until the day you get paid for it. Being frocked doesn't count, you are not getting paid for it even though you are wearing it.

SB5 good to see you. The DEPS can use a bit of salt with their answers.

USS Liberty, Never Forget.

I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist.
