So I figured that the best people to ask this question would be people that have worked in submarines. Would I have more/better opputunities if I went MT or SECF? I understand that SECF is comprised of multiple jobs, which you are later assigned to one. But how does the Navy specify which job is right for you in SECF? Any help that y'all can give me would be great.

I was a Submarine ET prior to the combining of the ratings. I did enjoy my time as an ET. When I joined it was a little different. You could choose to be an FT, ET, ST or RM prior to training. Now from what I understand you go to basic electronics training then get selected for your rating. Also it is normally needs of the Navy as to what you get for a rating. If there are openings for FT training pipelines when your class graduates then you become an FT. I am sure I will be corrected by those that are currently serving.
Since I did not serve on a boomer I cannot speak about the MT rating. Good luck in what you choose. And remember you are now a Dink NUB |

1)use the find function. You need to learn how to find things on your own, especially for qualifications.
2) this belongs in the joining forums. |

It also depends on what you would like to do in your submarine career. SECF ratings can go on any boat. MT is restricted to SSBN and, I believe, SSGN (I may be wrong on the second as that type of boat did not exist when I was in). If you are interested in seeing a lot of ports with long deployments, then MT may not be the path to take.
